Does MHZ on ram affect gaming performance?

Hey guys, Does MHZ on ram affect gaming performance? If it does what frequency should i consider?
Ill be using an i7-4790k and a gtx 980

In strictly gaming for the most part the DRAM is simply used as a data conduit, 1600/9 is generally the accepted entry level standard, with prices today what they are go for 1866 or even 2133 sticks as they are priced near same (some even less) and the higher freq will help in other computing tasks
