I have a Basswood motherboard (made by HP) and I just got a new case that has a from panel USB’s. I obviously want to take advantage of that but I can’t seem to find the green port to put the cord in. I’ve given a link for the specs on my motherboard if any of you guys could find that USB front panel connector and I’m just blind that would be great. Thanks in advance.

On the linked picture...bottom edge. There are three headers provided and labeled...one 'Front USB 3.0' one 'Front USB 2.0' and one 'Front USB Type-C'. cases usually have connections appropriate to the interface.

If your case has different connectors you may need an adapter of some sort. Possibly something like this to adapt the USB 3.0 header to a USB cable:

The cable I have is 5x2 with no pin on the top-left corner. That port is 5x1 pins with the 3rd one missing. Is there like a SATA to front USB adapter?

Looking at the picture I think I see the issue. The header provided is just one port, ie, one row of five pins. A full header makes two ports available, each row corresponding to one port with one dummy pin. It's further along the bottom edge, in white.

What is the full story behind this q? If you're moving this into a new case, you may have to leave one front panel port dead, or use a USB add-on card

Well, this is HP you're dealing with and they have their own ideas :)

The cable probably connects back to two front panel ports but the board provides output for one front panel port only. What I'd do is connect the 5x2 to the 5x1, using the one row only and try it out. If it doesn't work then reverse and try again. If it works all you'll get is one of the front ports working.

If it doesn't work you'll need to dig a little deeper on the HP website to find the pin-out of the headers and re-arrange the pins in the case connector to the correct locations. Sorry for that.
