I'm a little confused after a lot of research into whether or not my gpu will run/die with my current psu. Many people have said wattage ratings are unreliable, but then I hear more talking about how they're important to go by. My assumption is I need a new psu, but do I?

I can't currently list all my specs, but I'll list what I can.

New untested gpu: Radeon R9 380 XFX 4GB GDDR5 (

Current psu: hp-p3017f3 (stock)

RAM: 2 8GB DDR3 I think

CPU: AMD 4x Athlon II I believe

Motherboard: not sure, fairly sure it's ATX

Any help is appreciated. I really don't want to buy a new psu as I just bought a new gpu, but I'm not fond of frying new pieces either.

...also I don't have the pci-e 6 pins the gpu needs to run. Is the pci-e x16 enough to run it? I know it's only 75 watts (probably) for a 500 watt board, but I'm only using a single connection and could likely adjust the fan speed. I'm at a loss right now, please someone give me good advice here. :/

If you can find out what the wattage of your PSU is that would help greatly. However upon my research I believe your PSU is rated at 300W. The recommended wattage for your card is 550w according to the xfx website http://xfxforce.com/en-us/products/amd-radeon-r9-300-series/amd-radeon-r9-380x-4gb-black-edition-r9-380x-4285 . So yes you will need to change your PSU. Also GPUs don't work like you think they do. They need their own dedicated connection to the PSU and do not get electricity from the PCIE x16 slot.
