Does Nvidia suck?

It seems that every week there's some new controversy involving Nvidia. What's going with them?

I suppose I could list them all but frankly it's getting old.

What's next?

Prob just desperation in bad times. Some people within the company are in hot water and making bad decisions to try to not ruin nvidias great track record.
There will be some hangings if there havent already and the company will move ahead to better things.

I wonder what their CEO was talking about when he said the NV30 was to be as big as NV entering the gfx market itself..
the driver cheats dont taint my view of any company (ATI or NV).. who cares I'm sure theres little cheats (optimizations) everywhere but they just arent noticable like the scandalous ones.
NV admitted the 5800 was a failure, gotta give them props to eat their words and $$$ like they did.

Just growing pains, maybe they havent found themselves up against a competent competitor like a PO'd ATI.. frankly I view the latest mishaps as minor details and expect NV to be back on track soon.

Those who have visited their headquarters in CA say they are a class act of a company.

They've prob been in the 3D gfx lead longer than anyone, 3dfx started showing its wear in the V3 line and ATI never was much competition surviving off other markets until relatively recently.
Everyone else, rendition, bitboys, s3,intel to name a few really arent worth mentioning.

If these latest problems and lack of a dominating GPU are a result of concentration on the Nforce chipset, I am glad they did as my Athlons never were this stable without NV.
So no, my vote is they certainly dont suck.

Athlon 1700+, Epox 8RDA (NForce2), Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 9 80GB 8MB cache, 2x256mb Crucial PC2100 in Dual DDR, Geforce 3, Audigy, Z560s, MX500

yah, like every second day you hear something else. and my bad experiences with Anti Aliasing recently on my GF4TI made it even worse. for a while there i was completely amazed at how low they would go. blatantly lieing to our faces. false claims. false advertising. if someone wanted to be a prick , they could probalby very easily find quite a few Nvidia ads to be illegal due to false advertising, but i really have no idea how that law works.

i try alot to keep in the middle. but you see, my experienc with ATI has been nothing but stellar. first the rage 128 (the TNT2 wasnt taht much faster, common sheesh), then teh Radeon256 64meg SDR (BEAUTIFUL card. faster than any MX400, with image quality totally on another level. i know, ive owned both.). then the 8500le which blew me away with how fast it was, and how good 16x AF looked and only gave like 5% performance hit. compared to the competitions 30% performance hit (give or take , rough guess) for 4x AF, its quite impressive

my TNT2 died. actually 2 of them did. my MX400 was a good card. so was the GF3 a friend of mine had lent me for 3 months.

but what really made me anti-Nvidiot was how people would bash ATI with claims like (TEH GF3 IS SUPERIOOR TO THE 8500 any DAY .. ATI SUXXOR) all over the internet. and no one would argue it. its a well known fact that the 8500 is a faster card with more features and better image quality. but yet people still were stupid and bashed ATI unfoundedly. Yes there was bad driver issues with the Radeon256. that was a mega booboo on ATIs part. and why alot of people hate them

so tahts why i buy ATI. to me, they make better cards. better as in Faster, cheaper in price, better IQ (come on , argue it with me =) . i have multiple proofs first hand) and dont make claims like "Fastest video card on teh planet!" when actually its 10% slower than the competition

BUT, if Nvidia would release a good card , i would of course support them too. like a 5600ultra Rev.2, which is 20$ lower than the 9600pro. i KNOW they can afford it. a board doesnt cost barely anything to make, compared to the sales price. the volume of sales increase would more than counter the drop in price. but no, they seem to always overprice their cards for some strange reason

That's what I'm kinda worried about. It's almost as if Nvidia is trying to smother us in controversy so that we'll just get used to them and accept them.

I'm really really sick of this myself.

Should we all wager on what the problem will be next week?

The answer to your originally proposed question is YES!

But dhlucke, you've done it before and you're doing it now, underestimating the cost of not only producing, but designing and marketing these cards!!

Theyre not making 500 % here dude! This aint furnature!

Materials cost, youre probably right, not too big. How bout the initial investment of machines? Or the cost to use them/have someone print the chips for you (not old-skool machines can do .13!)

How bout a design team spending 2-3 years designing, running virtual tests, then actual tets, then redesigning (although not enough redesigning in the FX's case) all over again?

How bout the driver team?

How bout the marketing?

Stocking, shipping, paying CEOs, and JANITORS!?

The electronics world is known to have small profit margins. They make it up in volume and sheer cost.
By electronics im talking mainly about non-computer electronics, not including brand-new technologies (plasma screens, hdtvs are still up there).

But id venture to say that computers are the same, not a huge overall profit (including all costs!).

Once everything is paid for, its all profit on top of materials! Thats how nvidia can make money off mx440s!

But untill that happens, thats not how it is.

I'm confused why you replied with a fiscal evaluation. What does that have to do with anything I said?

i think he must have read your post, accidentally hit "Page Down" or something and skipped to the part where i said i would support Nvidia if they would release a 5600ultra Rev2 at a cheaper price than the 9600pro, because thats what he seems to be argueing

ahahah! kinda funny actually

It's almost as if Nvidia is trying to smother us in controversy so that we'll just get used to them and accept them.

yah , that is a way of looking at it. im sure its not their plan, but ive HAVE noticed alot of people just giving up when they have no arguement to support Nvidias cheating, and saying "WHO CARES. its only a benchmark"

god that looks ATI biased when i read what i just wrote. but its true. you have to admit that, even if your a hardcore Nvidia fan
