Does overclocking improve single core performance?

It sounds like a stupid question but there we go. I need good single core performance to play napoleon total war. I get bad performance with my ryzen 1600 but i think ive imrpoved it with my overclock to 3.8 ghz

Yes. It will improve single core performance.

Yes it will improve both single thread and multi thread performance to some degree assuming you are applying the overclock to all cores.

What speed is your RAM rated for? Ryzen scales very well with fast RAM. You should consider overclocking your RAM. For Ryzen, you want RAM that is rated for at least 3000mhz

Your 1600 should be able to run Napoleon Total War just fine. What GPU are you using?

The ram speed doesnt make much of a difference past 2666 if you are using a 1060 or anyhing slower

Ive had to lower settings below my old i5 6500 rig which really annoyed me because im on low/ medium settigs and getting 40-30 fps despite overclocking it to 3.8ghz. On the other rig i got about 50-80fps on high settings

Did you reinstall windows from scratch when you changed out cpu/mobo?

Yes i did, i formatted the hdd

What are your temps on your CPU when you are playing?

To make sure your hardware is running as it should, try running a bench on userbenchmark.com. It will test all of your hardware and compare it to other users with the same hardware. It will tell you if something is not performing as it should.

Temps are normal, single core performance is still slightly worse than the i5 6500. I tested it using cinebench r15

That's about right. Ryzen does not match Intel in single core performance.
