Does putting graphics cards in SLI really make that much of a difference in highend games?

I presently have one GeForce GTX 780 3GB 384-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 and I am wondering how much a difference will it make to have another one in SLI?

HI! I am a backer of Star Citizen which is a space sim that is going to be a super high graphics quality space SIM ( 10-20 times the polygons of today's high end games) so I am wondering if I should plan to sli my graphic cards to be able to view it at its highest resolution.

PS: I realize its hard to base things on a game that's not even out yet but how about on today's high end games?

GTX 780 SLI is only recommended when you plan to get a 4k display monitor or go multi monitors to mantain the frame rates.A single GTX 780 is sufficient to execute all games at maximum settings with solid fps.
