I was playing metro last light and just before that, I decided to raise most of my graphic settings in the nvidia control panel... I have a geforce gtx 780ti SC ACX and with higher graphic settings the performance drop was minimal but then out of nowhere my pc shut off and restarted and said "over temperature error" I think was the message... Did that happen because I raised the graphic settings a bit? My AC in my room was off too so my room was a little warm as well...could that have caused it or the higher graphic settings?

Solution
If you increase graphics settings so your card is working at a higher load percentage you will increase power consumption and heat. Since you had a small performance hit that indicates that your GPU was not the limit so turning up the settings allowed it to use more of its capabilities which led to more heat. Get a temperature monitor program on there like HWMonitor and see what temperature it gets up to while you are playing.
