I have a aspire 4520 with windows 7. When I connect the laptop to a router using an ethernet cable I am able to get on the internet. When the cable is disconnected, there is an x on the wireless connection and it is no longer available. My question is, Is there a way to connect to the internet without having to use the ethernet wire and if so what steps do I need to take? I have tried all the suggestions already provided and nothing works.

Do you even have wireless on that router ?
Is it activated ?
Do your laptop has a functional wireless card? ( I/E - not broken )
Does it have a working driver?
If yes on all questions, have you ever tried connecting any other WiFi device to that router? Maybe it's not properly configured...

So many questions... I suggest you find someone in your area that knows stuff about computers and ask to come and help debug your problem. It's kinda hard to debug it by just chatting on forums with strangers on the internet...
