does the core of a core2duo go up/down or left/right

when looking at a motheboard in a computer standing upright. is the core going left to right or up and down (assuming it isnt a square since it is a dual core). Basically I ask because when i run TAT i get a 5 degree diff between core 1 and core 2 as far as temps go.. Thanks

the same is true with the C2Q, cores 1 and 4 in variably end up being 4 degrees hotter at load (source at overclockers.com)
