Does the i7 4770k reach higher temperatures when there is no GPU?

Greetings,

I have recently built a new PC, still haven't bought a Graphics Card.

i7 4770k
Asus Maximum VI Impact
16GB RAM
256GB SSD

Lian LI PC-Q25B case with
Scythe Kozuti for CPU fan,
Scythe Slip Stream for Top fan,
Default 140mm Front fan

I do some light gaming, where I play League of Legends.

After playing a game, CoreTemp shows that MaxTemp can reach up to 85C.
I would say that during gaming it averages maybe 75C ( according to CoreTemp ), but I haven't really watched it.

However, I get consistently lower temps with Asus Suite III, perhaps 15C lower.
Dunno which one to trust.

I was wondering whether the high temps happen because my CPU is using it's integrated graphics, and there is no GPU yet installed.

Having a dedicated GPU won't increase the temps of your CPU. However, if you try and work your CPU harder by gaming on max settings for example and your CPU is having to work, then the temps will increase. I'm unsure on whether it will decrease CPU temp for light gaming, though it seems logical that it would since your CPU is having to do less work.

You could also try CoreTemp for testing temps, I've heard it's pretty accurate and I've used it for a while.

Is your 4770K overclocked?
If so, once you get past 1.2v, your temps rise considerably.

Love those small lian li cases.
I suspect you might have a bit of a case cooling problem.
Take the side cover off and direct a house fan at the innards. If that helps much, then look for a stronger 140mm intake fan.
A stronger fan will give more airflow, at the expense of more noise.
If you can, remove the hard drive cages to allow free airflow from intake to exhaust.

The tempratures are normal, i can confirm having the same CPU, see the grey area in my post.

You need a better Cooler, its not necessary but it makes sounds from hell and it will keep the CPU cooler. But you dont have anything to worry about trust me.

Yeah, that's not good for your CPU. Did you apply thermal paste when you put on the cooler? Regardless, you should try reapplying it.

My CPU can reach 75c only if I torture test it with Prime95 for at least 40 minutes. Gaming it gets to 55ish. 85c? That's insane.

All measured with CoreTemp. I am using a cheap 30$ I30 cooler.

I suggest you pick a decent budget cooler, like I did, it will do wonders. While theoretically 85c is still within the thermal specifications for this CPU, you should consider that it is not very healthy, throttles CPU clock at some point and will get worse as time goes on and shit gathers in your chassis.

I seen now that you got some sort of after market cooler, in that case you probably need to look into cabling in your chassis and maybe reapply thermal paste.

I didn't build it myself, I had it ordered and brought to my place. I ordered thermal paste to reapply and reseat the cooler.

Still waiting for the paste.

I'd stay away from anything too strenuous until you apply new paste to avoid killing that chip.

keep in mind that I am aiming for a silent PC. It's going to be hotter no matter what. And I am using a mini case.

Also, I am not using stock cooler.
I am not saying you are wrong. I am stating that if anything, I am supposed to get higher temps, I just don't know how higher those temps are supposed to be, when all variables are taken into account.

What point is there in your message? he uses a stock-cooler this is what you get, and you have horrible horrible temps for an aftermarket cooler.

Anyways 100 deggrees in prime 95 is worrying indeed, i would not even bother reapplying paste but getting a new cooler instead.

I recommend looking at the Noctua L9i, its really cheap and it comes with expensive thermal paste that performs really well, the paste itself is about 20 dollars.
AND it is very silent and even has a silentmode cable, while in stockmode its already quiet.

So yea good value, i peaked at 95C also when benchmarking, the stock cooler just is stupid.......no words for it and the sound when gaming is just outrageous, it just lifts of my desktop.

Edit: i see you dont have a stock-cooler then all that is left is thermal paste, it is always recommended to get a better stock-cooler though, from a nice brand like noctua.

Is this with new thermal paste applied? remember to clean off the old paste.

Anywayz it seriously looks like the whole cooler might be broken... still try to apply the new paste and report back if not applied yet.

So I reapplied thermal paste ( Arctic Cooling MX-2 ), reseated the heatsink.

After 10 mins of stress testing :

Please note that I also changed my Top fan. I had a Scythe Slip Stream 500RPM fixed. I replaced it with Lian Li's default noisy fan that runs at 1500RPM fixed. Very noisy.

Please let me know what you think. The better airflow seems to have lowered the temps but other than that aren't they still high?
