I already ordered a 3000 mhz 8x2GB DDR4 RAM kit for my nuild, but will be getting my CPU and MoBo Saturday. Is 3000 mhz RAM compatible with an unlocked i7-6700k and my Asus Maximus VIII Hero MoBo?

Solution
The speeds listed on the intel site is the stock speeds. It won't show oc speeds as there really isn't much a limit by the cpu. You see those insane memory oc, something above 4000 on both ddr3 and ddr4 and they were done on haswell and skylake cpus.

That doesn't really help me but thanks for stopping by. Someone said to go with 2666 mhz, but the Intel site says maximum supported is 2166...

Well, then it does answer your question, I suppose

Thanks for the help man, but then how do people run it with 2666 mhz RAM?

I'm not sure. You'd have to ask someone who understands better about RAM and CPUs. I'm sorry I can't assist you any further. The best of luck

2166 maybe that maximum supported by the CPU, just like on my motherboard CPU combo (Asus Sabertooth Z97/4790K), but with the motherboard you can run the RAM a lot faster than potentially recommended without too much trouble. On mine, the motherboard lists 1866 as the maximum, and I believe it's 1866 for the processor too (might be off on that one, might be 1600), but I'm running 2133 just fine. It will put a little more stress on the CPUs memory manager or whatever the fancy name is, but other than that, no worries, and if you have adequate cooling, which you should for an unlocked CPU, there should be no worries at all. I'd worry more about compatibility of the RAM at that speed. Haven't read much on the dual channel DDR4 memory only the quad channel. Worst case scenario, you may have to run the RAM a little slower than it's rated speed for stability. The good news is that RAM speed doesn't effect your experience much. The difference between the bestest and worstest RAM is only a few percent.

Just took a looksie at your motherboard specs, ya, you'll be fine, probably at the rated 3000, set the XMP profile in the bios for profile 1, and save and reboot, you should be fine.

Thanks! Still waiting for an "expert" or a person very knowledgeable of dual channel memory.
