Does the motherboard effect gaming performance?

I won't be overclocking,does a expensive board actually increase performance over a much cheaper budget board?

Only if you use 2 or 3 high-end graphics cards and the much cheaper board runs the second (and maybe 3rd) PCI-E x16 slot at x4 electrically.

They have those thingys.

What does really affect your gaming is a good mouse / keyboard / headset ( with good motherboard autdio output )
and a low refresh rate gaming monitor with at least 144 Hz!

I think it is worthwhile to look for a board with a decent chipset. Some budget chipsets have slightly lower performance inferior onboard sound and potentially not enough ports for expansion. Some budget boards are decent though, best is to read some reviews.
