Does turning off internet explorer in programs and features in windows 7 or 8 increase security?

I am just wondering what everyone's opinion is. I have never used internet explorer, I always used firefox and chrome. I had always thought that turning off internet explorer increased the security of the OS. Upon further reading one day on internet explorer, It seems that it only disables a part of internet explorer, not the whole thing. After all, windows explorer engine is ran through internet explorer. So I am just curious if actually disabling internet explorer increases security or not. What do you think?
