Does type of cable connection from video card to monitor matter?

Sorry if this sounds stupid, but does the connection from your video card to the monitor affect performance at all? So I have an option of vga, dvi or hdmi from video to my monitor. If I did hdmi from video card to monitor will that improve anything from just a normal vga or dvi connection from video card to monitor?

Well It can yes. For example a VGA cable will not provide the same quality as a DVI cable. Also VGA cables are only as good as the cable. So you can have a really good cable which you would pay a premium for or a generic cable. Either way VGA is the base. And there is DVI and DVI has different variations however the one thing that DVI is great at is being able to appease both the analog and digital markets. What do I mean by this so if you had a vga only monitor you can use a adapter on select DVI ports and it would work both ways. Beyond standard DVI the only two connections that would have really any impact on performance would be DVI-D which is for higher resolutions and refresh rates as well as Display Port which has the highest bandwidth to a monitor through cable.

I just got my parts for my new build so the plan is to use my existing monitor until I get everything up and running then re-evaluate if I should buy a new monitor. I dont have the exact model in front of me but I have a Dell 24inch LED monitor I got a year ago. It has a hdmi connection but I had been using vga since my old build didnt have an hdmi connection for the video card.

Would you recommend I upgrade the monitor or do you think it will be ok for awhile. I currently have a Gigabyte GeForce GTX 670 2GB video card.

That is a pretty nice monitor..it's 1080P, I wouldn't upgrade it yet.

Awesome! Thanks for the feedback, so I will just use dvi or hdmi then. I do have a budget of $400 if I wanted to upgrade the monitor, so if you have a recommendation for a better monitor please let me know. Thanks again!

Dell makes pretty good monitors. you can always go better and more expensive, but that one is still nice. Save your money, maybe add another monitor or two later for Nvidia surround..

I would hold tight on the monitor that you have. HDMI or DVI are just fine as your monitor supports both HDMI will push you to our monitors native resolution. And will perform better then a VGA connection. I would just hold onto the money right now your monitor is a pretty solid one at best and you wouldn't gain a lot from going to a different monitor at this time unless you intend on doing 3D or multi monitoring stick with the one you have and enjoy the 400 dollars you have.
