I have an eSata VIA VT6421 card in my Dell 9020 and it worked when connected to my Addonics 4 drive bay eSata external box.

I have not used that PC for a while now But when I go to use that box Dev Mgr says it has the latest driver but I do not see any drives in Explorer and it says it needs more power to work.

What does that mean please?

Will it work in Win 10?

Thanks

Many thanks. I believe you've hit thVIA card problem on the head 🙂 Can't think of any other reason and that does make sense.

Now I have placed a Startech eSata card in the Dell 9020 and it works fine with only 1 drive in it, but anymore and I get the dreaded BSOD with a 'Internal Power Failure'

I have Win10x64 with latest vs 2004 with the latest Asmedia 106x drivers which Startech say should work with latest Win10x64. It does show up in Dev Mgr under Storage Controllers.

I the tried in a home built tower with Win10x64 1903 and it does work.

So it looks like it is either the Win10 update from 1903 to 1909, or something in the Dell.

Any ideas here please?

Yes with the Multiplier which is the Startech PEXESAT322I card.
Startech PEXESAT322I
Mine is the MST5X1PM in that PDF.
As I said it does work in the other box with 1903 and it did in the Del.
but not now and only dif I can see in the Win 10 version 1903 -1909 then to 2004 now.
Driving me nuts as the Dell is where I need it.

Addonics told me the box doesn't need a driver it is all on the card in the box.

AIUI, the Startech card has a 2-way SATA port multiplier. You then connect one of its eSATA ports to the Addonics drive bay which has its own 4-way (or 5-way) SATA port multiplier. That is, you have daisy chained two port multipliers. Maybe Windows isn't able to handle this??

I don't know what to make of the 'Internal Power Failure' error, though.

Yes it is weird for sure, especially it works in 1903 an not 1909 or 2004.
It may be a bug. I will report it to MS
I bought an ICY box yesterday as I need another and it has both eSata and USB3 interfaces so I will try that later to see if it works. If it does then it narrows it down to a prob between the Dell and the Addonics.
If it doesn't work with eSata, then it has to be Windows.
Yes not sure about that BSOD error either. Looked it up but still none the wiser.

I will get back after I try the ICY Box.
Thank you, I really do appreciate the help.
