Does Windows encryption work on all versions of win 8.1?

I need to use Windows encryption and the Encrypt contents to secure data check box is grayed out. Googling around I found a Vista solution but it doesn't solve my problem. It was to change a registry key from 1 to 0 but mine's already 0.

Does encryption work on Win 8.1? If so, how do I make the grayed out box light up.

It works, but only if you use NTFS. If you're using ReFS it normally won't work.

You need to make sure that the encrypting file system service is operational and your account has a password
