This is about the 5th Australian / Chinese businessman jailed in China in the last couple of years ... and the story is similar to the rest.
The Chinese companies that are state owned manupulate any private businessmen they work with ... mainly through the receipt of "bribes" ... pr what we call "gifts".
In fact Western business practices often involve "gifts" as a mains to settle contracts between companies ... the practice is as old as Eskimo hospitality.
Chinese executives of state owned companies are poorly paid ... we know that and they know that ... hence they EXPECT gifts ... and won't do business with you otherwise.
If they are making money ... everything is fine.
Once any deal is interpreted as less than satisfactory then they setup the businessman by calling for a meeting on Chinese soil.
They they "extract" a confession ... and jail the "offender" for more time than you get for gunning down someone in the street.
The only advice I can offer is:
1. If you do business with a Chinese state owner company NEVER agree to meet them in China.
2. If you make any gifts then document them.
3. Send a lower level minion on any visit to China ... one with no connection to your business practices.
4.
