Hey guys,
Upgrading current i7-920/480gtx system to 780 classified and 4770k. Already have the GPU and will most likely be grabbing a VI Hero or Formula in the next couple weeks for the 4770k. In regards to memory, and with the focus being primarily gaming, is there any reason why one of the following examples would be a better match?:

Dominator Platinum 8gb 9-11-10-30 @ 1.5 2133

Gskill Ripjaws 16gb 9-11-11-31 @ 1.6 2133

Thanks for any input or questions.

Hmmm. let's see, 16GB vs 8GB (same freq/price) 16GB any day, RJ X vs Corsair , RJ X anyday, and in particular here if you go the Hero - Have run that exact set on my Hero in both the 32GB set and the 16GB set - no problem, I favor GSkill so always have a fair amount around....on my Hero I went with the Tridents

The 4770Ks on board memory controller is optimized for 1333mhz and 1600mhz memory speed, and any memory speeds past that are overclocking the memory controller, and overclocking the memory controller adds heat to the CPU, and shortens the life of the memory controller.

That may mean nothing to you if you have no intentions at all of overclocking the CPU itself, seeing as how you're listing an unlocked multiplier CPU such as the 4770K surely you will be overclocking it.

Many do not realize that overclocking their memory is limiting the CPUs multiplier overclock because of heat, and that some higher multiplier overclocks can not stay stable with higher memory overclocks anyway.

Secondly if you run a memory like 2133mhz that requires a high cass timings vs a lower speed memory with a low cass timing the end performance results are very close, but you're not overclocking the memory at all, and not adding that heat to the CPUs overall temperature.

Gaming and overclocking wise you really do not need over 8gb of system memory, 8gb as in 2 x 4gb modules for best overclocking performance.

So here's a couple of suggestions for you to consider.

G.Skill Ripjaws X 1600mhz cas7 8gb kit

Or my personal favorite! G.Skill Ripjaws X 1333mhz cas7 8gb kit (This memory is IMO a true cas7 with timings of 7,7,7,21 at 1.50v)

These modules will not be overclocking your on board memory controller to run, and will not be producing the extra heat overclocking the memory controller produces, which may very well allow one multiplier bump higher in your CPU overclock.

Just something for you to consider, as you did say, "Thanks for any input or questions."

That's great info, thanks. I do intend on overclocking the cpu fairly high (Have an H220 and two Noctua NF-F12 fans on the way already) and I don't think I considered the connection between memory controller and cpu overclocking potential like this.

Just as a side question, do you have any idea why Dominator Platinum is so expensive? Specifically, what is it giving you that would justify the cost? Looks like the timings are similar @ 1600. (Looking at 16gb models for potential ramdisk)

Well probably the name Corsair, kinda like a Harley Davidson, you know, paying for the name that was built on their past reputation!

Unfortunately while Corsair was busy out there diversifying itself in to power supply's, water and air cooling, computer cases, SSDs etc. etc., G.Skill was concentrating on memory performance and just like any Honda, Suzuki, or Yamaha Sport bike will eat a Harley for breakfast, so is Corsairs fate.

It's your money, spend it however you please, but G.Skill is the king today IMO.

My apologies to all Harley and Corsair owners!

+1 and +1

Moved almost exclusively to GSkill around 2008 (these days Corsair is about a year behind them with DRAM, and back in the late 70's had a nice HD and traded off for a Kawasaki, the Kow simply blew the door off the HD and better mileage to boot 😉

Ended up getting a pair of Trident X 2400. I currently have a set of Corsair Vengeance @ 1600 that I can use to test the limitations of CPU overclock brought on by the limits of the memory controller. Selected Tradesman's answer as best as I will be using a VI Hero board as well Thanks for the awesome answers though Ryan and if I find anything interesting when comparing the 2400 vs 1600 I'll post it here for others to see.
