Hi there,

I'm looking to upgrade my PSU at the moment and I've figured that I should get either a Corsair CX750 or a HX750. The HX750 is considerably more expensive.
The reason why I want to get a new PSU is because I want to buy a good graphics card (something like the GTX 1070) and I need to get a good PSU to be able to accommodate such a card. Also I hope to install a new 4TB WD Blue Internal HDD into my PC which will go along with my existing 1TB HDD which acts as my boot drive.
Just wonder will I be okay with just purchasing the CX750 for my purposes as it's cheaper? Would I be wasting money purchasing the HX750 or would it be wise for me to spend more?

My current PC specs are as follows:
CPU: Intel i5 2500
Motherboard: Asus P8H61-M
RAM: 8.0 GB
PSU: WinPower ATX 450W

Any helpful information that you could provide would be much appreciated!

Kind regards,

Brendan

Thanks for the helpful reply. I'm looking into the EVGA Supernova G3 PSU at the moment as it seems to be a popular PSU.

Apologies for my ignorance but what is the difference between 80 Plus Bronze and 80 Plus Gold?
The 80+ deals with efficiency. Bronze requires >=85% efficient at 50% load whereas Gold requires >=90% efficiency at 50% load. The higher the efficiency the lower the heat. Also it requires higher quality components to have higher efficiency.
By no means do you need a 750W PSU for what you are going to do. I would get a good quality 550/650W and go from there. Look at the Seasonic Focus Plus Gold, Corsair RM (2018 or 2019), EVGA SuperNova G3. All of those are good quality 80+ Gold rated PSUs and will last for years to come.

Thanks for the reply.

I understand where you're coming from but It's just that in the long run(years from now) it might be wise and more proactive for me to get a CX750 or something along those lines so that if I choose to get a new CPU,motherboard, graphics card and additional hard drives(including SSDs and HDDs) that the CX750 or HX750 will be enough to handle newer kinds of hard ware without me having to worry about getting another PSU.

Based on what I've described above do you still think I should get a 550-650W PSU instead?

You can run an i9-9900K, 2080Ti, LEDs, HDD, SSD, WiFi, etc... all on a 650W PSU https://outervision.com/b/GazLLL - note that these PSU calculators basically max out everything so your actual usage will never be that much.
It is very infrequent that a single GPU desktop will ever need more than a 650W PSU. However, you can always get a larger one if you want. Right now unless you are on a very tight budget, there is almost never a reason to go with less than a 80+ Gold PSU, as the difference in cost is a pretty small increase from 80+ Bronze. Right now the Corsair RM (2019)'s are a good value.

The EVGA Supernova G3 is a very good PSU.

The Seasonic Focus Plus Gold is also a very good unit.

All 3 of these linked PSUs are some of the highest quality units you can get.

The Seasonic Focus Gold is also a good unit just doesn't have all the extras as the Focus Plus.

It has a 7 year warranty vs 10 year, no semi-silent mode, and semi-modular vs fully modular.
