Don't 'quite' understand Volt/Ram settings in tutorial...

Hey all.

Before anything else, i have read the O/C tutorial. Only problem is my knowledge in this area is fairly limited... :)

Basically i just need a little help with what voltages and ram settings i should punch into BIOS.

System specs are as follows:

E6600 (Tuniq Tower 120 as cooling)
965p-ds3p
DDr2-800 4-4-4-12

Currently the RAM is at 5-5-5-18 in BIOS (default). Should i change it to 4-4-4-12? (Don't quite follow the tutorial in this part)

Also what would the ideal Voltage settings be for my system? Should i just follow the tutorial or leave them default?

I would like to get the clock speed to about 3.2. As long as it's stable.

hi,,, disable exrything like spectrum, c1e, eist,etc.... set your memory to 5-5-5-12. then put the fsb 322mhz and now set the ram 4-4-4-12,if it doesnt enter windows then up the vcore one notch. if it still doesnt boot up your nb-voltage. i am sure u dn't hav to touch any other things. good luck

With an FSB of 322 it only gets you to about 2898 (322x9=2898)

I would like to get to about 3.2Ghz. If anyone could reply with a bit more detail on the settings it would be great.

sry about the wrong calculation 😀 . try 360fsb. disable every option in bios like speedstep, c1e, EIST,etc. you should tighten the timing after pushing e4300 to 360 and increase Vcore one notch, you should not touch the ram settings like voltage, changing speeds,etc because your ram can run till 400fsb. just do the steps
1-Set PCI Express (PCIe) frequency @100Mhz (‘Auto’ for DS3/DS4/DQ6)
2-Set PCI frequency @33Mhz
3-Disable any ‘spread spectrum’
5-Disable ‘Limit CPUID Max to 3’
6-Disable any overvoltage protection
7-Disable ‘C1E’
8-Disable ‘EIST’
9-Disable No-Execute Memory Protect
10-Disable any other thing you don’t use
11-Do not enable any speed enhancements you see

Part2. Memory Adjustments
**Expand options for Gigabyte BIOS under ‘M.I.T.’ by pressing CTRL+F1**
Gigabyte: Set ‘Memory Multiplier’ to 2 (1FSB:1RAM operation)

Set ‘DRAM Timing’ to manual or disable SPD

DDR2-667 4-4-4-12 1.9V operating at ~400Mhz will need to be set to 5-5-5-15 2.2v

Leave the rest of other timings either at ‘Auto’ or at their default values


1. Set DRAM/DIMM Voltage (vDIMM) to 2.1V or 2.2V if specified by RAM (+0.3V or +0.4V)
2. Set MCH Voltage (vMCH) to 1.55V
3. Set FSB Voltage (vFSB) to 1.40V
4. Increase SB Voltage (vICH) by +0.1V from default-lowest value
Set Vcore at 1.375V if it does'nt enters windows then try 1.400v---{courtesy..Wusy guide}
 
Ah ok, it's all making sense now. I'll give it a crack in about an hour and see how it goes. :)

Just one more query...

My ram is DDR2-800, do i still put it at 5-5-5-15 2.2v?

Otherwise the rest is clear and easy to follow. :)

hey if you have a ddr2 800mhz ram than you should not add xtra voltage to vdimm because you are not going above 400mhz. choose the 1:1 sync mode and 4-4-4-12.
 
i just bought a e-6600 which i am plannin to oc.
i think i'll follow the same steppings given in this topic. i also have a corsair xms2 2 gigs ddr2-800mhz.
hey daniel, lemme know your progress on here and good luck reaching 3.2GHz. i have water coolin so i am hopin to go a bit higher. :)

i bumped my 6600 up to 333x9 last night, didnt touch any of the voltage or any other settings except to set the memory multiplier to 2.0 and i had no problems at all, idle temp of the pc went up about 2-3c and it stayed under 50c while running prime 95 on both cores...
 
i think daniel will have less problem of heat coz in e4xxx series there are only 2mb L2 cache (not like e6300 and e6400 they have 4mb L2 Cache but two disabled)

Is this recommended doing this? Because i'm having a few problems with the settings and such and this sounds like a nice and easy way to o/c to 3ghz.
 
from what i hear on the forums. the consensus seems to be that u up the fsb without increasing the vcore to keep the temps low. do it only as a last resort.

i found a website that gives a list of all teh cpu's and their max temp thresholds. for e-6600 , it is around 60 deg celsius. so if u stay below it, u should b fine.

i actually took it up to 3.2 last night, no vCore adjustments just set it to 400x8 works like a charm, idles about 3c warmer and prime 95 max load put it to 52c-53c... no problems at all
 
Not so sucessfully.. :)

When at stock speed it idles at around 39c in coretemp. When o/c to 3ghz with 9x333 it reaches almost 60c in Prime95 and isn't stable.

What im going to do is buy some proper thermal Artic Silver paste and another case fan and try and cool it all down a bit more. Because i only used an old shitty paste i had lying around. Maybe that will help...

Also one more question.... :)

In my voltage section in BIOS for these two options it only has and option to go (+05) or (+1) and so on. How do i know what the voltage is to begin with for these two? Should i just bump them both up by 1 and hope thats it?

Interesting post I have a quick question about my ram if I might steal a message or two. I just ordered an E6600 as well and I'm planning on overclocking my system as well and was wondering what I could do with my ram.

My Ram

It's good stuff from what I've read and it's going into an EVGA 680I motherboard. Any advise would rock. Thanks in Advance.
 
Stewartwi, you can do almost anything with that RAM.

At a 1:1 ratio, you could hit 571 FSB (if the rest of your system could handle it, which it -almost certainly- won't) without running the RAM past its specifications.

At 400 FSB (a potential overclock to 3.6GHz for an E6600), you could probably run the RAM at a 3:2 ratio (for 1200MHz)

You have pretty much guaranteed that your RAM will not be the limiting factor in your overclock.

Thanks glad to hear it. 🙂 I'm throwing that ram and the mobo and E6600 into a TJ09 case and Thinking of grabbing a Tuniq Tower 120 to cool it. At least till I go water cooling. Thanks for the heads up I'm glad I decided to go with that ram and not the Super Talent. Thanks again.

that seems high... maybe u should get a better heatsink or better yet, go wtih lquid cooling since u r going to oc. thats what i am doing.

hey daniel my freind gets 26C at stock idle (using stock fan). u should paste more Thermal Grease. U should get very good results from Tower like 22C idle and 29C load (stock)
