"As an example, the team tossed in the Rage input control and checkpoints. They also updated the lighting so it's brighter throughout the game, changed the annoying flashlight, tweaked the ammo, and even implemented the Rage network layer to make it run faster at low latency. There's also 3D support, and multi-display support for the PC platform.'

So... basically they removed all the good stuff that made DOOM 3 gloomy and creepy? I loved DOOM 3 the way it was, don't mess it up!

[citation][nom]Old_Fogie_Late_Bloomer[/nom]Maybe I'm nuts, but I kinda wish they'd remake Quake II...I loved the atmosphere of that game, but you try to run it today and it just looks...old. And not in a charming D1X/D2X way.[/citation]

YESSS!!! Quake 2 on a MODERN (not tech 5) engine would be amazing.

@ ricardok

I had the opportunity to attend Quake Con 2012 and sat through Carmack's keynote speech. He profusely apologized about the disaster that is Rage and reiterated several times that they won't make that same mistake with Doom 4. Also had a change to demo Doom 3 BFG Edition on PC and it was effin' phenomenal! Can't wait for it tome come out!

Just watched the lost mission trailer and paused it at a few screens and it looked like the same old pixelated low res wall textures in a lot of places. Granted that might have been an early run but it looked like the old doom just brighter with textures that werent as shiny and new looking to me.

Lets face it people cry, unreal, dunia, even source engines have spoiled us to expect high res textures on everything and carmack just doesnt get it. We should all stop listening to him and his senile ranting about how "back in his day they did it this way and it was better." Oh really grampa carmack? and did you walk up hill both ways in the snow to the office? Did you forget your meds again?

A lot has changed since 2004. I remember buying my 6800GT AGP card mainly for this game. It's now in the museum along with the AGP bus it operated on. I'm glad they are putting forth the effort to properly bring this game up to current standards. It's a smart move as it will introduce those new players to the Doom franchise and re-ignite the interest us older players have while they work on Doom 4.
I'm surprised the article didn't mention much about the oculus rift support.

[citation][nom]robochump[/nom]ID made Doom 3 brighter?!? The whole idea of Doom was to be gloomy and freaky. Take that away and its not Doom![/citation]
Don't worry, its gonna be OK! Its gonna include a paper bag that you put over your head. It makes it at LEAST 10x darker than the original Doom III! :)

This actually sounds like it might be worth it. Hopefully its priced around $30 and not $60. I'm glad they're going to brighten it up a bit and 'fix' the flashlight, add some more enemies. The original had a great feeling, but if I'm paying for a 'new' game it should be at least a little different.

Mainly this. I don't want to spend the full-price cash just to get go-faster stripes and fixes that should have been in the original. I'm willing to pay - just not anywhere near full price.

Shot an email to the customer support a few weeks ago to ask if there'd be a discount price for current owners or anything, but no response as of yet.

[citation][nom]ricardok[/nom]As long as it's not plagued with RAGE bugs....[/citation]

What specifically are you referring to as to bugs with the RAGE engine? I didn't see any when I was playing RAGE.

Although I appreciated the darker, quieter and creepier atmosphere of the original Doom 3, I'd be interested to play through the game with these new tweaks as well. To all the people complaining about how the dark atmosphere is an inextricable part of Doom 3: You can still play the original version! Id is not going around to everyone's computers and deleting the original version and replacing it with the BDG edition. Heck, you can have both, and compare them directly yourself!

those were eventually fixed but when you spend 8 or so years on a game you expect it to work pretty well out of the box. I never experienced them either and from what I remember it was mostly people on amd cards that had these problems.

[edit]
My problems were the low res textures when you got up close to them. you look at a rock from 10 ft away it looks cool but you walk up to it and kneel down next to it and look at it and it looks like its a rock from the super nintendo its so pixelated... look at the ground in this pic

Thats what Im talking about. The guy looks super detailed but the building and the ground look like its on the game cube or ps1

Yeah, I remember those 'bugs'. I always thought that it was because I was playing on PC. Apparently not.

I'm afraid they removed all "AAA!!! OMG I'm gonna die 😡 *pew* *pew* doge uff -_-' 10hp" which made Doom 3 so fun to play... and this flashlight which didn't show half of crap that's comming for you. Very dense atmosphere of upcoming doom of loading saved game was present all the time. I hope they don't remove that with brightening and less of scary flash light.

I can't wait this game was so good =)

@namtrooper:

I don't think that's correct. The "RAGE" engine is Rockstar's engine. RAGE (the game by id Software) used an engine referred to as id Tech 5.

In other words, they ruined the game.

The dark atmosphere of Doom3 was unrelenting and just right. This point is lost on many people, who simply see it as "too dark". The flashlight thing was dumb, yes, so that is a good thing to fix. But the darkness and atmosphere was awesome.

Author: The game was not slow-paced. Play it on a decent skill level (not easy or normal) and it is unrelenting and chaotic, with the player constantly being ambushed.

I heard the enhancements were for Xbox 360 only, NOT for PC. I truly hope this article is accurate (this one here today) and we have not just misled thousands of potential buyers.

Sentence Making: I was so filled with rage when RAGE was popping textures the first day I tried to play it so I went back to playing Pokemon[/citation]

Thanks Greghome. I don't know how I confused the two. My bad. I just read somewhere rockstar used the RAGE engine and I made an assumption. You defnitely deserve a thums up for clearing that for me.
Cheers
