DOOM3, I don't get it

I wonder is it just me or what, I tried doom3 demo, and glad I didn't
get the full game.

no automap, why? I find myself constantly lost in the maze, in so many
pretty much all looked the same "cubic/rooms", and just hopelessly
wondering back and forth, I don't know why that's fun 😀

I got 4 speakers only, why doom3 can't implement 3D sound effect for
that? Far Cry, Half life 2, UT2004 etc. all did it beautifully, what's
so special about doom3 that requires 5 or more speakers? or we just
have to fake it in control panel all the time and that works ok? I
mean this is ridiculas.

graphics is fine, although constantly in dark places just doesn't show
it to its full potential.

I was a fan of the original doom, got the pc and PS versions.

it could be a wonderful game, what a shame.
I hope Id will wake up, listen to players, and deliver something
better.

Because there's nearly always only one way forward and one way back.
Getting lost in D3 is quite an achievement ;-)

> in so many pretty much all looked the same "cubic/rooms"

A common complaint is that much of D3 looks the same. My reply would be
that a real, modularly-built Mars base would indeed have such a narrow
range of architecture. Of course this isn't reality, but I thought ID did
a great job of making the basic structures and lighting serve as a
great backdrop to the various types of animated machinery which brought
the base to life as an environment. Throw in the tension, the flashlight
and steady progress of the plot and I thought it all came together well as
a project.

Many disagree. Such is gaming life.

No idea, I always game with headphones to avoid annoying others, and the
sound environment in basic stereo blew me away. One of D3's greatest
achievements for me is the detailed use of sound to add to the whole
experience without resorting to the easy option of "mood music".

Play in the dark. If you want daylight try HL2 🙂

So do I, but in the mean time I've very pleased they gave us D3. There's
no rule that says we all have to enjoy or buy every game though. Hope you
find something else to give you as much pleasure as D3 game me.

They're adding a hazard suit with lights attached in the upcoming Doom3
addon pack, Doom3:Ressurection of Evil.

Hasn't Doom always been fairly repetitive and samey, though? I think
the environments were very well done - the lighting IS dark, but
rather than detracting, I think it does what it's supposed to and
highlights the oppressive atmosphere. ID have to try and get the
balance between new technology and producing things that older
machines can still run - I think the sound issue is an example of
that. For what it's doing, it does very well. Doom 3 was always
heralded as the latest breakthrough in graphical technology, and it
can't be faulted for that. There are other games for other elements -
I don't think any one company can create a perfect game.

Quake IV will probably do this, if Raven give us the same kind of
environments we saw in Quake II :)

I agree with this post completely. Whilst the graphics are in my opinion,
the best any game has ever had, the gameplay is fun for a short time only.
We need some open spaces, a little fresh air now and again. A little more
lighting too - its way too dark to be played for more than maybe an hour at
a time.

A few positives:

- Best looking game of all time.
- It scared me shittless, I have never ever been so jumpy with a game
before.
- Weapons are very cool
- Sound is awsome, I have th 7.1 speakers so can take advantage.

Unfortunately, I forgot to copy my save files before a recent hard drive
format. I was about 50% of the way through the game, and I just dont have
the heart to start again. If I could remember exactly where I got to, I
could skip levels, but to be honest it was ages ago and I am really
struggling to remember...

Gary.

Both ID Software and Valve have come close on many occassions, valve more
recently I would say!

I didn't notice the cubic rooms.

I was too busy cramming my heart back in my chest.

I agree. Try Painkiller: Heavens got a hitman. Its a great FPS in the old
DOOM style (kill everything that comes at ya).

I got lost in Doom 3 once. Enabled noclip and looked for an hour or so,
still couldn't get anywhere :)
Then I realized I had to backtrack. Not too common in a Doom game, now...
