Anyone played it?
What's it like?
Does it put Source in the shade?
Is it any good for mod makers?
Any built in tools or developer stuff?

Been playing it. Very dark, not very open maps. Mostly corridors etc.
Haven't played Source, but from what I have read here :

http://www.whutdufuk.com/?post=632287876827187500

they give source the thumbs up from a technical point of view.

Personally, I prefer the open maps of HL and CS, not one way corridors,
dark, open up a door and get slashed by a demon before you realise what
is going on type games.

Tools, mods, developer stuff - not sure.

Doom 3 was a big disappointment for me. It's nice looking, if a bit dark
(especially as my geforce 6800 ultra can show all the fluffy things) but the
gameplay seems to be lacking something. There will be loads of mods coming to a
download site soon though. I hope someone does a decent CT v T type thing for it

I looked on the minimum specs and it stated win2000 or above.
I'll wait until it's in the bargain bin, by which time I will have upgraded
my PC.
I think the single player 3d shooter needs to be pretty special to impress
nowadays.
Great graphics just isn't enough.
I remember the great thing about the original Doom gameplay was that if you
entered an area, with different combinations of foes appearing, you had to
think quickly about what you tried to kill first as well as what parts of an
area you moved into, health packs placement, ammo placement and quantity,
playing the enemy off against each other by making them fight each other
when the line of fire was occluded etc. There was a skill to it.
Since 3d shooter games engines moved to non sprite models there has always
been a certain lack of enemy numbers, in order to keep frame rates up. This
has resulted in the loss of the pure intensity and escalation of battles
that you could have. This is especially so in large open areas, where I can
fondly remember the panic of enemy hoards coming into view in Doom1&2.
Sigh....ahh the good ole days....

I just got Doom 3 and playing on win98SE fine with a hack to the exe
(very stable, no crashes so far).

My first impressions are that the graphics are incredible, no ammount
of screenshots/movies prepares you for just how good it looks ingame.

The graphics are almost worth the price of admission especially if you
have a high spec machine and can run it at high quality.

I'll make a judgement on the gameplay once I get further into it but
so far I'm not dissapointed and finding it quite intense and immersive
although not as scary as I thought it might be.

Great to hear you got it running on 98SE.
Any info on the hack would be appreciated.

Here's the instructions I followed, worked like a charm:

First download Hex Editor
http://www.expertcomsoft.com/

Second make a backup of the Doom III exe file.

Third install Hex Editor and open the DoomIII exe (doom3.exe) within
Hex Editor

Fourth click edit on the toolbar to bring open a menu. Within the menu
that appears click Find.

Fifth put in the find box GlobalMemoryStatusEx Now press ENTER.

Sixth you will now see highlighted GlobalMemoryStatusEx. The last 2
number of the line are 45 and 78. Change both numbers to 00. In other
words change 45 to 00 and 78 to 00.

Seventh save the new Doom3.exe and play to your hearts content.
