I am running on highest quality and *8 AA on 1024x768
When swinging round, the picture momentarily fragments/pixellates (could be
top and bottom of screen catching up with the video data?)
Is this just something I can't avoid?

I am running on a Dell Dimension 8300 2.6GHz HT
1Gb of memroy (2*512) PC3200 DDR400
Sapphire 9800 pro unltimate 256Mb

Any ideas or comments welcome please
Thanks
David

You could also try enabling triple-buffering if Vsync causes too much
of an FPS hit (the FPS will be locked at your screen refresh and drop
to whole fractions of your refresh rate if less).

Turn down the AA, or even turn it off.

Sounds like you need to turn on V-Sync

That older video card is apparently not powerful enough to process the
intense video load of that game with your AA cranked up to 8x.. Try turning
it down to a reasonable number.

Yeah, what the hell!? I'll bet that runs really great...

I third that. Also, put it on the Low quality setting with a 9800 Pro. I'm
currently playing RoE with a 9800 Pro and I can't tell any difference
between Medium and Low quality when I'm plowing down hellspawn.

My point is if you're constantly running, ducking and jumping within the
corridor crawl that is Doom 3 then you're not going to notice all the purty
textures and details on the surfaces in the first place. The game engine
scales remarkably well, so enjoy the gameplay instead of taxing your rig.

My 2¢,

I personally played the game on High settings with no worries at all. It ran
great. 60fps in the timedemo etc and was fantastic during gameplay. (v.
similar to original posters rig, except I have a 3Ghz P4)

However, upon formatting my drive to set it all back to loveliness, Doom 3
now starts jogging and stuttering hideously after a few levels when using
High settings. No idea why, same AGP driver, tried the same radeon
drivers.... everything. Anyway.... now I have to play the game on medium
(which greatly delays the stuttering rather than fixing it) - anyway, my
point is that the Radeon 9800 Pro is capable of higher than low..... and my
card is the 128MB version.

Still, you're probably right....... I can't see the difference between
medium and high...... and the performance gain is minimal.

Did you have any tweaks in your 'doomconfig.cfg' file before? Only one I
use is seta image_anisotropy "2"

This allows me to play in high detail with no slow down at all. There are
lots of other tweaks but I haven't needed to experiment.

PC is WinXP Pro, NF7S(2), 9800Pro (256bit 128MB 5.7 Omegas), Barton XP2800,
Audigy 2ZS, 1GB PC3200 (now have 1.5GB but haven't tried that with D3 yet).

I really appreicate AF.... the difference is incredibly clear. I've also
noticed when testing most games that all benchmarks etc turn out practically
identical whether I have AF set to 0, 2 or even 16! The difference is always
very clear though. AA, now that's something I can live without. Jaggies just
never bothered me that much (especially at 1024*768+). Considering the
performance hit is often huge, I just go without AA.

I believe I had a few RAM tweaks, such as those cache ones. Still, I put
them back in with what I think were the figures I used before, and it hasn't
fixed it. Still, whatever... I finished Doom 3 (& ROE) ages ago, and
throughly enjoyed it. No need to worry about it now. :) - i'm sure it'll
magically fix itself by the time I feel like playing again...

Mostly likely, your problem is Video Sync. Turn it on, and it'll keep
the on-screen graphics from fragmenting whenever you move around. Your
framerates will definitely suffer a little bit, though.

Incidentally, my gaming rig is almost identical to yours. I can't play
the game at anything more than 2X AA on 1024x768 without suffering
jerky framerates on battles with multiple enemies. I strongly suggest
you turn AA down a few notches.

Same case here. In RoE, the outdoor areas really bog down my rig. I've even
turned off AA completely and bumped the resolution down to 800 x 600 and
they're still slow going, especially when it seems Vulgars, Forgotten Ones
and Cacodemons are (re)spawning everywhere. I realize I said "the game
engine scales remarkably well," but it seems to crawl in the outdoor parts.

Obviously, the level designers were thinking "run like hell!" for most of
the outdoor settings, but it's nearly impossible when you can't physically
pass areas where the enemies teleport in. You really notice it in
slow-motion whenever you use the Artifact. Hopefully the engine will be
tweaked a little better by the time Prey and Quake IV come out. Either that
or I'll have a better setup. 😉

Where do I read the framerate?

Enable Vertical Sync. It's somewhere in the Advanced Video Options area
of the menu.

Excellent - the changes to config file have made a sigificant difference
Thanks
