This seems like good news to me. SS2 is one of my all-time favorites. I often thought that someone should make a redo with better garphics (but don't mess with the sound effects or voice acting - they were the best).
I picked up SS2 for $5 a couple years ago. Still a great game despite the 4-5 year old graphics. This is especially true with the hi-res model skins that Etienne Aubert created for the game. This particular project is called System Shock Rebirth. Unfortunately, Aubert stopped working on the project about a year ago. The skins are still available and they look good. See screenshots at link at end.
BTW, Thugsrook, who made the mod to enable win98se has done benchies that show slower FPS under 98. Hopefully, somebody from the modding community will create a patch to fix that.
As for Doom 3, I can't say whether it runs slower on 98SE or not since 98SE is all I have (not counting ME). I'm getting pretty low framerates with my Radeon 8500, about 25-30 FPS but I'm surprised to be playing the game at all, and at 1024x768, medium quality. My system is pretty much the minimum, Radeon 8500, 384 MB SDRAM, Win98SE. Only my processor is above the minimum, a Tbred B XP1700+ @2.1 Ghz.
I've only played about 5 levels of Doom 3 so far but but only the plot reminds me of SS2. The gameplay is classic doom. Shoot everything the moves and if too many creatures come at you at once then run.
Once you get past the modern graphics engine there are plenty of ties to the orinal Doom games. I don't know the names of them but many of the old creatures are still there. They behave the same way, for the most part. The weapons are the originals (AFAIK).
I'm enjoying the game so far.
However, I couldn't deal with the near total darkness of the game. I use the "r_gamma 1.5" hack. Brightens up the game yet the creatures can still disappear into a black background (or come out of the blackness and startle the crap out of you).
