Yup, Doom 3 can be played on Win 98se. Prolly only good news for a few peeps. Here's a link to the mod http://www.bleedinedge.com/forum/showthread.php?p=33544#post33544

Hmm, I tried it and it asked for CDs. Gave up and went to Gamecopyworld, and got a 1KB patch, which finally made the game work in 98se :).

No more OS switching for me, nope 😀.

Maybe I got my link from one of the other threads. I thought it was this one...

Glad Doom 3 could be made to work with Win9X. It's going to be expensive enough to upgrade the video card without having to upgrade the OS along with it.

I'm creeping along now at 25 FPS, med quality, 800x600, no shadows, but at least it works. I'll play for a while. Perhaps I won't like the game enough to bother upgrading hardware and OS at this time.

Have to say the game looks better than anything I've ever seen (even with my old Radeon 8500) but the game still reminds me an awful lot of System Shock 2 and the plot now seems old. (Could be because I recently replayed SS2).

This seems like good news to me. SS2 is one of my all-time favorites. I often thought that someone should make a redo with better garphics (but don't mess with the sound effects or voice acting - they were the best).

BTW, Thugsrook, who made the mod to enable win98se has done benchies that show slower FPS under 98. Hopefully, somebody from the modding community will create a patch to fix that.

Wow, and I thought I was slow to give up on 98SE. I just changed that on my gaming rig maybe 6 months ago. Yet you have me beat.

I picked up SS2 for $5 a couple years ago. Still a great game despite the 4-5 year old graphics. This is especially true with the hi-res model skins that Etienne Aubert created for the game. This particular project is called System Shock Rebirth. Unfortunately, Aubert stopped working on the project about a year ago. The skins are still available and they look good. See screenshots at link at end.

As for Doom 3, I can't say whether it runs slower on 98SE or not since 98SE is all I have (not counting ME). I'm getting pretty low framerates with my Radeon 8500, about 25-30 FPS but I'm surprised to be playing the game at all, and at 1024x768, medium quality. My system is pretty much the minimum, Radeon 8500, 384 MB SDRAM, Win98SE. Only my processor is above the minimum, a Tbred B XP1700+ @2.1 Ghz.

I've only played about 5 levels of Doom 3 so far but but only the plot reminds me of SS2. The gameplay is classic doom. Shoot everything the moves and if too many creatures come at you at once then run.

Once you get past the modern graphics engine there are plenty of ties to the orinal Doom games. I don't know the names of them but many of the old creatures are still there. They behave the same way, for the most part. The weapons are the originals (AFAIK).

I'm enjoying the game so far.

However, I couldn't deal with the near total darkness of the game. I use the "r_gamma 1.5" hack. Brightens up the game yet the creatures can still disappear into a black background (or come out of the blackness and startle the crap out of you).

alot of pl found the brightness to be a problem in this game but, i disagree totally.

that is what keeps me interested. when something jumps out and scares the crap out of me. i will have to stop the game(twice i have had to get up and watch tv or something to regain composure) but i always come back for more scary crap, ya know?

The problem I found is even with the game brightness set to max, my monitor brightness set to max, and contrast very high I was staring at totally black and grey screens. No textures, no visible creatures, no keys, no optical discs, no toxic waste barrels, no objects at all.

I really think there must be something wrong with the gamma in my video driver for visuals to be this dark. Without the gamma adjustment I never saw the spider like creatures at all, not even shadows, nothing. The soldiers appeared as shadows up close but at shooting range I couldn't see anything, not even shadows. I couldn't see that some of them were using duck and cover tactics, because I couldn't see them nor the objects they were behind.

What's the point of lighting effects, shading effects, and hi-res textures if everything is pure black and grey.

It's all "fixed" now.
