Hi all!

I just noticed that the screenshot on DoomRL's page is *very*
outdated... Well, I was just about to creat a new one, when I thought
that this could be a nice idea for a competition 🙂. So here are the rules:

1) Make a screenshot of DoomRL and send it to me to charonATmagma-net.pl
with the tag [DoomRL-screenshot].
2) The image should me at most 800x600, and be either *.gif or *.jpg --
eventually a zip-compressed *.bmp.
3) There are two categories:
-- serious -- do a screenshot that represents DoomRL
-- silly -- category open ;-)
4) The main reward of course is having the screenshot published on the
webpage, and optional:
-- your name in the random name file
-- your name in the credits section
5) The deadline is 'till the 14th of May.
6) I reserve the right to eventually make a gallery with some of the
entries ;-)

I hope that anyone will join this competition, for DoomRL realy needs a
new screenshot :-D

This competition is a tough one for me. I keep trying, but I'm too
much of a perfectionist, and can't stay satisfied by my screenshots.
I think I've got 50+ in the screenshots folder I just created, but
none of them is good enough...

Oh well, time to go try again now. ;-)

No :-(
Did you use this e-mail adress? charonATmagma-net.pl?
The one in the "reply to" field here is bogus.

PNG, please! (I know at least two votes for PNG have already been
cast; I just wanted to add mine.)

I really want to, but I can't figure out how to get a decent screenshot
of a "pseudo-DOS-mode" game on Windows XP. I don't want to use Command
Prompt, because all the default fonts either look awful, or don't have the
"dot" glyphs you use for floor tiles. I tried DOSBox, which takes
screenshots with Ctrl-F5, but neither the Windows nor the DOS version of
your game will run in DOSBox. I even tried Screen Thief v2.01, an old DOS
screenshotting utility, but it crashed in Command Prompt.

Suggestions welcome.

Oh, and Kornel: Very nice game! (My first character did much, much
better than any one since then, so I'm not sure how challenging the game
is supposed to be yet. Needs more playing by me, obviously. 😉

My last post, in which I asked how to take good screenshots of
pseudo-DOS-mode programs in Windows XP, hasn't shown up yet. But I
figured something out that does /almost/ what I want, by finding a
font to use in the "Command Prompt" window that looks kind of like
a DOS font should, and that has the "dot" glyph DoomRL uses for its
floor tiles. (Instructions for changing the "Command Prompt" font
can be found online.)

So I took a bunch of screenshots, PNGized them, and put them here
http://www.contrib.andrew.cmu.edu/~ajo/disseminate/DoomRL/
at least until May 14. Do with them as you will. They're mostly
boring, but I got a few action shots of barrels exploding and imps
attacking, and a couple of shots I thought were clever:

005 - You mean there aren't fish in those barrels?
008 - Preparing for the descent.
011 - Ouch! (I'm the red asterisk.)
012 - What you don't see is the former human getting exploded.
013, 014 - Tool use in the higher primates.
016, 017 - My submission in the "silly" category.
020 - I don't get it. I have /several/ rockets!
021 - I don't think it'll ever replace "Ready... Aim... Fire!"
022 - Still no fish? (Note that all the Boom!s are actually from my
chaingun, not the barrels.)
024 - Invunerability [sic].
025,026 - Vunerability [sic].

You all do realize that between "The Tombs" and "DoomRL," you've
collectively determined what I'll be doing for the entire week of
final exams, right? 😉

Where did you find said font, and what is its name? Just curious.

Ok, PNG accepted ;-).

Its name on my Windows XP computer shows up as "TI Uni (TrueType)";
its filename is "TIUNI.TTF". I assume it came with my TI-83 GraphLink
software, and therefore isn't freely distributable.
I did notice one problem with it, by the way; the "large dot" character
DoomRL uses for pools of blood isn't the same width as the rest of the
characters, which screws up the display sometimes. Other than that, it's
nice.

DosBox seems to use the proper DOS font. Try asking them.

I wasn't trying to get screenshots but this happened.

Before (recreated except for the experience):

After:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y41/RastaJew/screenshot2.png

It made such a satisfying noise.

I've looked through all of them ;-). Some of these are pretty good 🙂.
I take the ones mentioned below are entries :-D.
