Im looking to go from a bog standard laptop to a workstation and have been looking at various configurations.

Looking to use software like:

Premier, Maya, 3d Studio Max, Cinema 4 D, Solidworks, Inventer, Rhino, V ray, Keyshot as well as the usual Photoshop, z brush, illustator indesign

So a mix of video editing, CAD, product and Prop Design, some 3d amimation and effects lus some youtube video blogging and podcasting.

Looking at a starting configurations : £1,679.00

  • Intel® Core™ i7-7740X 4.3GHz 8MB L3 4core 8thread Socket 2066

    ASUS® WS X299 PRO

    16GB Corsair VENGEANCE 2133MHz

    PNY Quadro P2000

    250GB Samsung 860 EVO

    1TB SEAGATE BARRACUDA HDD 6 Gb/s 1,000 GB 7,200 RPM 32 MB
    -- --

----------------------------------

would it be better to upgrade the configuration to the next Quadro graphics card up:

Quado p 4000 for £2048

----------------------------------

Upgrade the processor to a i9 10 core processor: for £2205

Intel® Core™ i9-7900X 3.3GHz 13.75MB L3 10core 20 thread

----------------------------------

or the next i7 - The 6 core version
Intel® Core™ i7-7800X 3.5GHz 8.25MB L3 6core 12thread Socket 2066

with
1t m2 solid state drive
1TB WD Black™ M.2 1TB Up to 3400MB/sR Up to 2800MB/sW

£2231

----------------------------------

Intel® Core™ i7-7820X 3.6GHz 11MB L3 8core 16thread Socket 2066

with Quadro 4000 = £2,179.00

or just simply doubling the i7 cores to 8 at the max 17 configuration with the 2000 quadro would be

Intel® Core™ i7-7820X 3.6GHz 11MB L3 8core 16thread

£1813.

---------------------

More simply put should I double the processor, double the graphics card, go for one of the new i9 processors or do a mix of 6 or 8 core processor with the Quadro 4000 possibly with a decent solid state drive?

Also is it work looking at things like xeon processors and boards , possible dual processor with lessor processors or a single similar priced xeo processor or I7.

Looking at something I could upgrade later as well.

the base starting configurations are here

Xeon ori 7, and is ecc memory worth it? and does the memeory speed ie 2133 mz or 2666
make any difference.

Which is the better strategy please?

You are better off going for more cores and threads, so something based on the AMD R7 2700X (8C/16T) and 64GB RAM

Is this going to be mission critical, probably not, so ECC memory is not worth it.

Your memory speed will make small difference, but generally get the fastest you can afford.

Get an M2 pciE SSF (512GB) then look at possible a RAID 0 pair of HDD for bulk storage.

Think about how you are going to backup your data (hint, hdd on your workstation is not a good plan).

If you are not going to be gaming then one Quadro card will be enough, if you are going to play games (down time) then a nVidia 1080.
Your best guide would be the GPU HW requirements for your software.

Consider a 30" 4K monitor as your minimum, as you will be staring at this screen for many hours per day.
