Doubts about upgrading

Hey guys

I want to update my computer but i got some doubts about it.
You guys probably see dozens of topics like this so thanks already for opening mine!

The case:
I got an somewhat older PC with this motherboard: Asus P8Z68-V
It got only a GPU on the board itself, no other one.

Add the SSD, but keep the larger HDD at least.

The GPU will work if your PSU is powerful enough and has a PCI-e power connector.

I would advise against using that 380W PSU with GTX960, since you have to factor in the other components as well, and especially the fact that PSUs need some headroom (preferably 50%) for long and stable operation.

Best options are either to:

- upgrade the PSU to a quality 550W model, like XFX, Seasonic, Antec, EVGA G2, or
- get a less demanding graphics card, like Nvidia 750Ti. Not as fast as 960, but still a huge improvement over onboard.

I think you are good.

Antec earthwatts is generally a good quality psu. It has a 6 pin pcie power connector which a GTX960 needs.
The max power draw will be 140W, 75w from the slot, and 75w from the 6 pin connector.
With 380w continuous power, 230w should be fine for your other parts.
the 2500K is a 95w part. If you are heavily overclocked you will come closer to the limits.
Your 2500K is strong enough to power an even stronger card, but that would require a psu replacement.

As to ram, you are good again.
Adding ram may have incompatibilities, but replacing with a 2 stick 8gb kit you should be OK.

I'm not quite as negative as the above poster, herrwizo.

I'm OK with systems at 70% of rating. That's still a good place in the efficiency and 'life' curve. For that PSU 70% is about 260W. Your system, including GPU, will use less than 220W in ordinary use, and even peak use in extreme gaming will be short duration, and within the capabilities of the PSU you have.

If you were building a new system, I would recommend a good 450W PSU, but the Antec Eco 380 is just good enough that I would use it myself in these circumstances. When it needs to be replaced, and your system upgraded, I would upgrade then. The PSU does have the single power connector that you need.

You are definitely pushing the reasonable limits, but you have yet to go over the edge
