Currently rock a 6800xt and 48" 4k TV, I mostly main single player games and am a big fan of having the best possible visuals when I play. With that being said at least 60fps is something that I require and in a lot of recent releases this is becoming harder to achieve. I guess the main question that I'm asking is, is the drop from 4K to 1440p going to bum me out, if not purchasing a 1440p monitor is much more cost effective than buying say a 7900xtx which Imo is my only option as it garners a near 50% performance boost.

Any opinions are valued.

It takes a 2*2 pixel input and puts it on a 3*3 pixel output.
So on your display the corner pixels will match, but the pixels inbetween will be averaged. It may be difficult to notice at that size, but it may appear fuzzy.
Going down to 1080 will be a 1:2 relationship so there will be no aliasing, but the decrease in pixels will be noticeable.

Unfortunately Game developers don't think about 4k 60hz. So they don't optimize very well here, and unless you are running the latest and greatest it will always feel like you can't play above 4k 60hz. Or they rely on something like Dlss that does a poor job with fast motion action and it's more a printing an FPS number on the screen even if the end result is poor.

If your TV isn't an Oled, I would go the 1440p monitor route. You will always be chasing 4k60hz. So it's better to put your money into something you won't be replacing in 2 years.

Yeah in pretty much every new release I require FSR which don’t get me wrong still looks excellent but it makes games with beautiful world lose certain qualities. The purchasing of a new monitor doesn’t mean getting rid of my 4K TV so I can just the add new monitor to my setup and test performance game by game.

What is the make/model of your 48" TV?

What is the make/model of the rest of your specs?
cpu/psu/case/....

Most tv's take only hdmi input.
HDMI 2.1 which your gpu has is needed for 4k@ 120hz.

Once you experience 4k, You will be disappointed at less.

If you have difficulty reaching 60 fps, it could be because of the gpu, but it also could be due to insufficient processing capability.
It depends on the type of game.
Fast action needs a good gpu.
cpu centric games like sims, mmo and strategy games need good cpu capability.
Particularly single thread performance.

Try this simple test.
Run YOUR games, but lower your resolution and eye candy.
This makes the graphics card loaf a bit.
If your FPS increases, it indicates that your cpu is strong enough to drive a better graphics configuration.
If your FPS stays the same, you are likely more cpu limited.

Model of tv is a Samsung 43” UE43BU8000

I’m being pretty extreme in all honesty most things run pretty well, for example I get solid 60on cyberpunk ultra settings no rt but using fsr which in turn drowns out the visuals a bit but it’s not the end of the world im just looking for a performance boost so I can cope with <Mod Edit> poor ports like TLOU Remastered when they roll around.

I have an RTX 3090. It's hard to get over 80fps at 4k not using raytracing on ultra settings without Dlss in Cyberpunk. Every other game though...
In cyberpunk you really need those frames and Dlss makes me feel sick.
In cyberpunk even with my 48" monitor and gpu, I think about going down to 1080p just to get sufficient frame rate.

Yeah, it’s a weird and kinda privileged position to be in. Because I mainly play single player games It makes me think purchasing another monitor where I’m going to sacrifice fidelity is pointless.

Do you mean in regards to purchasing a new monitor or changing res?

That was more a monitor suggestion. Something in between 1440p and 4K which gives you a wider field of view and drops your pixel count to about 5/8 of 4K.

Though you could experiment with custom ultrawide resolutions on your 4K TV. 3840x1620 unscaled would give you the same aspect ratio as an ultrawide and cut down on your pixel count by 1/4. You would just have black bars at the top and bottom. (And assuming your TV would actually do this, I know they tend to have trouble with odd resolutions) I occasionally run DOS games on my TV, force it to 1080p, then run a 640x480 square in the middle. Makes it about the size of an old 27" TV on a 60"
