Hello again,

In a recent thread i've explained what has happened to my PC so to make it short here, the mobo is fried and it does not make sense to buy a new one with the same socket or buy it used because it'll cost just as much as doing a partially new build.

Here's what was in my case:

MSI X79A-GD45 (8D) - Mostly unavailable now or with a pricetag around $500
Intel Core i7-3930K
Patriot Viper 2133Mhz (can't remember exactly)
Corsair H80
MSI 780ti SC
EVGA Supernova 750w g2

I'll need a new CPU, MOBO and most likely RAM as the new standard seems to be ddr4.

So here's my question: What is a viable downgrade/upgrade option in your opinion? I haven't really been tracking the newest PC components since i've built this PC so my knowledge is limited.

My budget= +/- $500

I agree with keeping what you have and buy another motherboard, but if you think that too expensive (checked used?) maybe look at socket 1150,like a 4590+decent H97/B85 motherboard if you don't need such a high spec cpu or a xeon if you need the hyper threading and don't overclock. If you use faster than 1600mhz ram get a not too expensive Z97 motherboard. You can reuse the ram in that case.
If you're rebuilding a gaming system then an Intel i5 is the best option. You can add more memory and change the cooler to suit your preferences.

Your old CPU is an 6 core one. Intel has yet to release an 6 core on skylake. Stick with it. Buy a motherboard. There is like 1-2% performance difference between DDR3 and DDR4. Main difference is DDR4 uses lees power to run.
