Downgraded Internet Speed Question

I currently have a 50 down internet plan but only get about 25mbps (which is fine for my needs). If I downgraded to a 30mbps plan would that effect my current 25 down speed? I'm not sure how ISPs throttle speeds and if the only reason I was getting 25 to begin with was because it was allowing up to 50.

How are you achieving 25mbps? Hardwired? Wifi? Powerline? etc.

First off, if you're paying for 50 and only getting 25, I'd be getting in contact with your ISP regardless.

If you're hardwired, then dropping to a 30 plan shouldn't impact the 25 you're currently getting IMO (generally), but there are variables.

If you're on wifi, 50% of your plan speed isn't unheard of, depending on range/hardware etc - so a 30 plan may only result in ~15ish.

Ah, with powerline (depending on the hardware used), it can severely limit your speeds.

I have powerline in my office, and I see roughly 30 over it, vs my 100 plan I can achieve over ethernet (or wifi!)

Assuming you're getting your full quoted speeds via ethernet (test it and see), there's a good chance you'll only see the same 50% or so of what you pay for when using powerline.

Dropping to a 30 plan may well result in 15ish or worse.
