Downgrading PSU Question

Hi there just a quick thread 🙂

My Power Supply is a 1050 Watt Power-cool model i used to have two GTX 460 graphics cards in my computer but now i only have one does my computer need all this power i took out two old unused PCI cards at the moment my PC is powering

AMD Phenom 2 ( 955 ) 3.6GHZ Overclocked
10GB DDR3 4 sticks in total
DVD Rewriter
2TB HDD
GTX 460 768 MB

And 3 case fan Leds You might be thinking what why would you downgrade its only because the misses thinks that my PC is power hungry and moans if im on it for over an hour XD

What do you guys think is my system ample enough as it is does my computer really use all that power the computer is quite loud with the fans is this the cause of any concern would a Gold Graded PSU be worth the time or money if so what wattage do you think my computer will safely downgrade too

A power supply doesn't work like that, the capacity is more like a rating of what it can possibly deliver and what equipment you are running on it decides how much power is actually being used. Switching from a 1000w to a 500w won't change the power consumption unless the efficiency is changed.

You can replace the fans with quiet ones and the CPU heat sink/fan combo if you need, but there isn't much point in changing out the power supply if it's working. Higher efficiency supply generally aren't worth the money in energy savings, but can cause less heat to be generated which might be worth it for you if you have heat/air flow problems, but even in that case it's probably cheaper and easier to just replace fans that are loud.

I run my 965BE (3.8Ghz OC) with a 7850 off of a 500 watt supply. The machine peaks at about 350 watts from the wall (As measured with a Watts-Up-Pro) which means that if my supply is 85% efficient then the machine is actually using about 300 watts or so and the rest is wasted as heat.

in my opinion,,, don't change PSU... cause it is heavy enough for your future expansions and if you really want to downgrade, i will suggest to buy corsair RM series PSU.. the are gold graded and fully modular.. go for 750w

Thanks for the quick reply so my 1000 watt does not produce the full amount of power it holds only what it uses to power components so i'm guessing the unused power stays idle so the point of downgrading is pointless as it will generate similar results even with a lower rated psu thanks for all the reply's i think i will stick with my currant psu will defiantly have another look at the case fans again possibly replace them 🙂
