Downloading into Sims2

How do you download objects into the sims 2.

As far as i understood so far :
some dl come as win rar files so you need that to open the files ,
others as zips ,others as executable files
Rar files you open with the program then install them
Zip files you open by unzip them and then install them
Execute files you just execute
All files are when openened self installers and will install them self in
the right map, as fas as i understood so far
And i have the gane just some days ;-)
