Downloading with dialup connected @ 28.8 this new computer
is hitting speeds of 5.5 and staying there. I don't understand it
but I like it.

Any Idea's?

Possibly downloading compressible stuff.

Try downloading a zip file.

Downloading with fios, this old computer is hitting speeds of over 600 and
staying there. A long time ago with dial up I got about 7, 14 with ISDN,
and abot 80 with dsl. It's sure nice to dl a complete Linux dvd distro in
under an hour. DSL would take about 4-7 hours, and I wouldn't even try
with ISDN or dial up.

Would that be with the 5 Mbps plan? Can you
have the 30 Mbs plan for your free month and then
switch?!

Yes, that the 5/2 plan. $39 a month. the 15/2 plan was only $49 a month,
but I really don't need that kind of speed and I'm sure many servrs
couldn't provide it anyway. 30/5(?) was way too much for me. Even the 5/2
makes dsl look slow. And to correct something in my last post. Although
the 7 was dialup, it was single channel ISDN. I don't recall what I got
with a modem. Haven't used a modem for internet in a lot of years.

Me neither. I'm still on dial-up. When I need to download something
big, I do it at work. I was about to order DSL when they started to dig up
the neighborhood for Fios. The splicer guys I asked said probably mid June,
so it should be soon. I guess I should run some cable from the garage to my
desk so they don't staple it all over the outside of the house! I suppose this
means the phone is going to be ringing more...
