I have a 720p monitor, and tried downsampling it to 1440p.

Would it have the same performance impact as a 1440p monitor?

Should I buy a new monitor instead?

i guess your using dsr? sadly its not as good as expected and causes input lag. as monitors dont downscale genrally they will just say signal out of range or no signal found if your trying to run a rez outside its spec.

if you run a 1440p screen you dont get the same effect due to the gpu not having to scale down the final image.

In theory if you set it at 1440p it will be the performance of 1440p, although since the monitor is 720p either the monitor or the video card will have to downsize both will affect performance, though, the hit on downsizing won't be all that great. What are the rest of your specs and what games are you playing?
