Yes, I know, it's old, the motherboard and CPU aren't manufactured anymore. It is very slow, and I don't remember it being like this when they first bought it, I think it was in 2005. Also, I think it has a bunch of other problems. When it runs, it makes a very loud noise. Maybe one of the cooler fans is causing this. I was also thinking that the thermal paste between the CPU and the cooling system might need to be changed or somthing. I saw in the BIOS that the temperature of the CPU is at about 60-61 degrees Celsius. Any advice?!
They don't use it for anything else except browsing the internet and occasionally playing some music on it. Dad sometimes cleans the dust inside, but that's about it. I was wondering if I could use the same motherboard but with a newer CPU. Also, would like to bring it to 4GB of RAM.
Here is what I found in the motherboard User Manual:

Support for the following:
• Intel® Core™2 Duo processor in an LGA775 socket with a 1066 or 800 MHz
system bus
• Intel® Pentium® D processor in an LGA775 socket with an 800 or 533 MHz
system bus
• Intel® Pentium® 4 processor in an LGA775 socket with an 800 or 533 MHz
system bus
•Intel® Celeron® D processor in an LGA775 socket with a 533 MHz system bus

Could anyone tell me what would be a cheap CPU for this? But one that would be better in performance than the one it has. Thank you!
If your parents system still works and they can live with the fan noise, you may be better off leaving it alone until you have more experience changing out a motherboard. First time rookies always make at least one mistake. Or find a person with experience and let them change out the board/cpu for you. I use craigslist alot. I found an asus am2+am3 board with 4 gb of ddr2 for $35 the other day; the guy lived out in the country and knew it would be hard to get folks to come to his house, so he knocked down the price.

I was thinking exactly the same. Although I was watching some tutorials about changing CPU's and felt the urge to open the case and see what's wrong with it
Too bad I can't use craiglist; doesn't help me, I'm not from the US. In my country I would be better off buying a new system; good bargains are almost impossible to find here. :pfff:

I was thinking of buying a new system for my folks, one that I could use when I visit (and I visit alot :sol: ):
-Motherboard: ASUS M4A785TD-V-EVO/ U3S6, AMD 785G, AM3, 4xDual channel DDR3 1800(OC) Ecc-nonECC, 2xPCIEXP16x (CROSSFIREX@), 1xPCIEXP1x, VGA ATI Radeon HD 4200, DVI/ HDMI, 8CH, Gigabit LAN, SATAIII, SATAII, RAID 0, 1, 10, JBOD, ATA133, eSATA, 5200 MTs, ATX
-AMD AM3 PhenomII X4 850, 3300Mhz, Cache 2MB, 95W, 45nm, QUAD CORE
-GPU ASUS EAH6770/ DC/ 2DI/ 1GD5, ATI Radeon HD6770, PCI EXPRESS 2.1, 1 GB DDR5, 850/ 4000MHz, 128BIT, DVI, HDMI, D-SUB, DUAL SLOT, DirectCU

Was thinking of asking a friend to help me put it together. Around Christmas I'll make them a nice present :wahoo: Thanks alot o1die! :)
