Hi guys

I'm totally new to RPG games but I was bought DAI for Christmas. I've installed it and played through the first hour or so and I like the look of it.

I was just wondering how to get into the combat though. For instance how do I know which character is best for a certain enemy type? Which weapons / spells are most / less effective against what enemies?

Do I discover this just through playing, trial and error? Could you guys give me any tips? The game doesn't come with any manual. Suppose I could try and download it.

At the moment I'm just kinda guessing what / whom I should be using.

Anyway let me know what you guys think.

Cheers

When you enter tactical mode you will see what enemies strengths and weaknesses are, and what status effects they have active. Like if they have barriers or guard active, you will need barrier or armor penetrating boosts to remove those faster. I usually keep a Mage, Rogue and Warrior in my group, each with a secondary weapon to swap to with different runes/upgrades for different situations. Playing rogue I found having a corrupting and cleansing rune on my daggers made for solid damage output.

Thanks man I haven't look at tactical combat mode yet. Thats when you pause the game isn't it. The egg timer icon.

What are status effects? just effects that they currently have applied?

I'm playing as a Mage, is that a decent choice?

Thanks again.

All the classes are good choices. Like FinalDrive mentioned, I like to have at least one Warrior, Rogue and Mage in every group, but beyond that, experiment. Don't worry too much about alternate weapons early on, that is something to consider late in the game, unless you are a mage, in which case you might need to swap out fire or cold staves due to weapon resists.

I personally prefer to run with 2 mages so you have two characters with the ability to barrier your group, and dispel, but I do play on hard and nightmare difficulty. I stop worrying about that when my group gets really powerful.

Anyways, just play through and don't be afraid to experiment. That is where most the fun is. That is what gives a game replay value.

I am about 3 hours into a Elf Mage run, coming from my 90+ hour Rogue character it is a pretty big difference in playstyle, but I am adapting. The tactical view (back button on 360 controller, unfamiliar with the KB/Mouse interface) shows only what status effects a particular enemy has active at that time (i.e. panic, poisoned, as well as the various buffs), this will allow you to target weaknesses and can help setup combo's that increase your focus to use those awesome Tier 2-3 abilities more frequently.

As to what class to play, as bystander said, experiment. Take different groups while questing, as there are some strange dialogue exchanges between party members, depending on who you have with you. It is also a good idea to control your party members to get a feel for how the other classes play, since when you hero falls you don't want to be fumbling with an unfamiliar character while trying to revive him/her.

It felt weird playing an Elf Mage and siding with the Templars, but why not, with the way I setup the world state in the Keep it kinda makes sense.

One more thing, there are focus abilities that get overpowered, to the point it is simply game breaking. If you want to insure challenging boss/dragon fights, you might consider not getting the tier 3 focus abilities (forces perk). In my current run through, I've taken down 8 dragons in the game in under 10 seconds simply by using tier 3 Thousand Cuts and having really good gear. I have a feeling I won't quite have enough damage to do that on the last 2, but I'll see what happens if I have Vivienne cast lightning on it for all the added damage.
