dragon scale mail and you

Just a little question regarding dragon scale mail. Every time I play a
non-monk and end up with some dragon scale mail then wander over a
polymorph trap I'll turn into the kind of dragon that used to own the
scales.
Today I zapped myself with a wand of polymorph while wearing black dragon
scale mail and became a black dragon.
Does the magical nature of dragons trump the supposedly random nature of
polymorphing?

The scales do. Careful if you're not magic resistant; when you're in
dragon form and poly into something else, you'll lose your armor. (Note:
not when you poly back into a human/whatever)
