I had installed a fresh version of Windows 8. The on board sound card driver is not working and bought a external sound card ESS MAESTRO 3 ES 1980s. This sound card is not working on Windows 8 but fine on Ubuntu.

In the Device Manager in the Other Devices section I had two devices with a Warning icon which are
1. Multimedia Audio Controller
2. Video Controller

I downloaded the driver for ESS MAESTRO 3 but i could get the driver only for XP. I tried installing in Compatibility mode as it says Unknown OS but the sound card is not detected.

Please help me fix the sound card problem

But I remember using that same card with Windows 8. I had posted a previous question about the error that came on Windows 8( A BSOD error). That OS perfectly worked with that Sound card, but dont remember where I got thatdriver

probably only if it accepts the outdated driver.

right-click on Multimedia Audio Controller and try to manually update the driver to the one you found:
extract files from the driver install package to a directory.
when it asks for the location of the new driver point to the location you extracted the files to.

possibility you could find a similar newer card from that manufacturer and use it's driver but there is no guarantee you would find one or if it would work.

1) You said it worked on W8.
Maybe. I'm incredibly surprised though. I can only recommend an inexpensive card that supports Linux and W8/10.

*I suspect if it worked at all, that it would only work through the default Windows audio drivers. Even then, you may have issues with some software/games.

2) Upgrade to Windows 10?
Windows 10 is a better OS, and who knows maybe there's some software issue in W8 that is causing your issue. If so, upgrading to W10 may help.

Some people won't upgrade to W10 citing issues with the "spying". Suit yourself, but it's not the huge deal many make it out to be, and most of it is easily DISABLED.

If you DO upgrade, see if audio works by default (and maybe retest onboard by enabling it in the BIOS unless sure that's broken). You can have multiple audio sources running, and toggle between them via:
audio icon (sys tray)-> playback devices-> choose and set as default

This also goes for attaching HDMI to something and switching to a graphics cards HDMI audio output.

3) Sound card: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-sound-card-xonardg

Other:
Did you verify that onboard audio doesn't work in Linux?

2. Actually i degraded from Windows 10 because it does not detect.

I verified on board sound that it does not work on Linux. But it automatically shows the sound card i had to just disable the on board sound and the sound starts coming from sound card

Installed Windows 8.1 32 bit and I could install the device driver from Device manager. Now the sound starts coming from Sound card.

Thank you all for your support.
