Driver Update Won't Stay

My current display adapter is the Intel Q35 Express Chipset Family version 8.15.10.1930 and I'm running Windows 7 32-bit. I'm trying to update it to version 15.12.75.4.1930.
I've tried updating it using Intel's Drive Update Utility as well as installing the new driver from the website (https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/18223/Intel-Graphics-Media-Accelerator-Driver-for-Windows-7-exe-).
After I finish trying to update it from both sources, my screen resolution changes to 1680 x 1050, the resolution I'd like it at, but the minute I restart my computer or put it to sleep it changes back to 1280 x 768. How can I make the update stick and keep the 1680 x 1050 resolution?

But how can I make sure the 1680 x 1050 settings stay?

So then why does my screen change to 1680 x 1050? I can clearly support the resolution so why won't the update stay?

I don't think this has anything to do with the driver update.
If you are already running driver 8.15.10.1930, this package is not updating the driver.
As to why the resolution is not available, it is more likely that the display is not being detected correctly. IS the monitor connected directly by DVI, VGA, etc. or is there a KVM, switcher or some other device in between.
When did this problem start?
What, apart from the driver installation, has changed?
Why were you trying to update the driver in the first place?

The monitor is being connected by VGA and the problem started as soon as I restarted my computer the first time after attempting to update my driver & nothing else has changed; as soon as I restart my computer it's like nothing ever happened. I'm trying to update the driver so the resolution of the windowed mode of a game I'm playing can fit in the screen, haha.

On a side note, when I use the Intel Update Driver Utility and it's installing the newer version, the screen resolution changes and then it says the update fails. I probably should have mentioned that earlier...

You say "the problem started as soon as I restarted my computer the first time after attempting to update my driver". Does this mean you had some older driver that worked reliably at 1680 x 1050?
When you look in display settings, is your monitor listed as "generic" or is it correctly identified?
Does this change after the reboot?

I had an older graphics card that worked reliably at 1680 x 1050, it got corrupted, we replaced it with a basic one.
In Display Settings it's listed as Generic PnP monitor

So I just turned on my computer after turning it off last night and as expected, it's back to 1360 x 768.

I'm going to perform the driver update again manually by going to Device Drive and selecting the igldh.inf of the new version in the updated driver file...

So I updated it and it briefly changed to 1680 x 1050 and then back to 1360 x 768 and now it's telling me to restart my computer so the changes can take effect. But no changes are going to take effect!!!

You are associating a driver update with a change in resolution. These are two different things.
Open the "Search programs and files" bar and type "Device".
Select "Device Manager".
Find your display adapter, right hand click and select properties.
Click on the driver tab.
If the driver version is "8.15.10.1930", the drivers are up to date.
Installing the drivers again won't change anything.

Right hand click on the desktop and select "Screen resolution"
Click "Advanced settings" and then on the Monitor tab.
Uncheck the box "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display".
This should allow you to select any resolution you want, but if it is not supported by the monitor it may not be displayed correctly.

I did that and it won't go any higher than 1360 x 768 even though the monitor can clearly support resolutions higher than that as it has done so before.
Oh well..
