I've been using the simple and free DriveImage XML for partition backups. It works under XP and newer. DI was last updated about 2011, so it's not ancient. DI's best feature i that it uses VSS and works in the background. (I use ntfsclone/ntfsresize (linux rescue) to move partitions around.)

DI has problem with my new 750GB USB disk, although the 320GB USB disk works fine. DI will not recognize nor display any disk larger than 320GB, in it's pull down menus. This is the case no matter how DI is run; under the OS or standalone.

Is there something in USB drivers or hardware that distinguishes between 320GB and 750GB?

"last updated about 2011" is a somewhat useless statement, it's the version number you need to take note of.
The latest version is 2.44, released October 2012: http://www.filehippo.com/download_driveimagexml/

There are better (and faster) imaging solutions. Best ones are not free if you want more features and more frequent updates.
I use Active@ Disk Image. I've been using it for 5 years, wouldn't use anything else: http://www.disk-image.com/

The free version of Disk Image does not have a rescue boot image. That is *ESSENTIAL* for any backup system. Try the free version of Paragon back/restore, or Macrium. Both are free and have cold metal restore. Paragon has the fastest timings and excellent compression.

DM XML defines its backups in readable XML format. Thus it's archives are not coded in a secret propriety format, which is the attraction.
