I was doing a back up of my Mac Pro and I dropped my Samsung 3TB hard drive. It said that the drive now is non readable and it gives me the option to initialise it. AS stupid as it sounds I have no other back up (yep I know!) so I'm petrified if I initialise it I will lose everything, Can anyone help - I'm clearly not a techie!

Hi there Missellie2017,

That is really unpleasant. 🙁

Mechanical drives are really vulnerable to shocks/hits. It has sustained some physical damage.

Most probably, you will not be able to even initialize (data destructive) the drive.

This is why, as kag1999 said, you willl need to look for some professional help. Most of the HDD manufacturers offer their own data recovery services or have some trusted partners.

Cheers,

If it was dropped while it was running theres a good change you did some damage to it. If this data is really important to you the best bet is probably to send it off to a data recovery service. They know what they're doing and should be able to recover most if not all of your data.
It's often not cheap though.
