Specs:
gigabyte z390 aorus ultra, on newest bios version
9900k, running stock speeds, 4.7ghz with boost to 5.0ghz
OS and steam is on a 970 evo 500gb nvme, games themselves loaded on a different 970 evo nvme
16gb of ram in XMP
2080ti, issue happens with stock or with increased power
1000w power supply
The computer is new leading to a small sample size, but I'm not sure I want to write this off as the game's fault. Alien Isolation worked fine, I was using a wired xbox 360 controller however. Dishonored 2 on a bluetooth xbox one controller is experiencing my issue. The wired controller broke, so unable to test switching.
While playing Dishonored 2 I will stay right near the frame cap of 120fps, however randomly it will plummet to 4fps. Sometimes this is an hour or more in, sometimes very quickly. I ruled out it being looking at intensive spots. Same area does not produce an issue after it passes, or with a restart etc.
I have had HWinfo64 open and immediately checked and found both the CPU and GPU under 75C. I'm unsure on specifically how to tell if it's a memory issue. Immediately after it occurring I have minimized and looked at HWinfo64 and it shows stats such as virtual memory committed 16,000MB, and the virtual memory available is very low. However in that same area it lists the physical memory load being a low percentage.
Also to note, these 4fps dips often pass and I can go back to playing without any impact. If it was running out of ram would I not experience prolonged issues? I have already run a memtest and it came back with 0 errors.
Some additional observations. First, I have had the massive slowdown hit me while in menus. Even so far as I tried to load the game during it, and where normally the game loads in 1 or 2 seconds, it took 10 to 20 seconds to load. Second, when my computer drops to 4 fps, my bluetooth xbox one controller will lose signal to my computer. I have to take the batteries out to turn it off, and turn it back on.
No idea if these two things are relevant to the cause, or just being effected by the problem. Thanks for any help.
