DS going away???

I was at EB/Game Stop talking to a friend of mine who is knowledgable about
new/coming things. He said that Nintendo plans to scrap the DS- It wasn't
doing as well as they thought, and the PSP graphics make it look like a GBA.
Anyway, he said that Nintendo plans to scrap the DS and put out another
handheld very soon that will be more on-par with the PSP. Has anyone heard
about this? I started the conversation asking about why no one is making
accessories for the DS and that there were so few games. He explained the
above information. Has anyone hears about this? Please reply. I have a DS
and do not plan buying a portable unit that costs more than 199.99.
I'd rather play my GBA and/or xbox.

I wonder if this was the same GameStop employee who, in March of 2002, told
me Nintendo was going to scrap the Gamecube.

Nintendo are hardly going to scrap the freshly launched DS system, but
they are rumoured to introduce a new-generation GBA later this year.
Your friend had probably heard these rumours.

I just hope you guys/gals are right. The problem is, if the new GBA is true,
it sounds like they are spreading themselves thin.

What a tool, the DS had record sales and they are going to scrap
it...not very likely....in Australia the DS in the 1st 3 days outsold
any system at any launch EVER....and Mario DS was one if not the highest
selling game at launch as well.

He's wrong and not very knowledgable; or maybe he's trying to sell you a
PSP.

The DS is outselling the PSP in Japan, it probably won't here because
Americans are more visceral and Nintendo rushed the DS to market before
the wi-fi network was in place. If I understand the scant info coming from
Nintendo, the DS and upcoming Revolution will go hand-in-hand as part of a
world-wide multiplayer duo-system.

Supposeably there will be a new Gameboy system out this Christmas, but I
haven't read that in any official Nintendo communication.

That's a possibility, but I doubt the next Gameboy will run Gamecube
games. The games might be Gamecube quality, but I doubt GC games will
run on the next GB.

Nintendo has always claimed that the DS was a 'third pillar', meaning
that they'd have the Gameboy line, the DS line and the home console
line (currenly Gamecube, which will be replaced by Revolution.)
Assuming that they're telling the truth about intending to support 3
product lines, then upgrading the Gameboy line shouldn't have a huge
impact on the DS line.

said, the DS had the fastest-selling launch in both America and Japan,
and was just released in Europe where it once again set records,
actually outselling the American launch (a first in console history,
600,000 units in a week.) The DS is outselling the PSP in Japan.
They have an install base of about 4 million units, rapidly
approaching 5 million. The DS is a massive success by any measure.

A thought: Could the DS be there because the next Gameboy will not be

Of course. This is an new product. You HAVE to expect a dry period of
games. Its been this way with virtually ALL console launches.
