Ever since i added a Netgear RT 314 router, my DSL connection has dropped dramarically. It went from 1.3 mb to 600kb or less. I have gotten as low as 12kb. is it a router setting? NIC cards? cables? i go direct connect to a pc, and it flies......

Have you gone into the web based configuration and made sure all the settings are correct? You can also telnet into it for advanced options. To telnet into it go start-run-telnet-192.x.x.x whaterver you routers ip is. There are a lot of settings in there I don't know what they do, but you can check to make sure everythings correct.
Also make sure your using the cat5 cable and not the crossover cable.

As an obvious question - if you take the Netgear out of the equasion does it again rise back to 1.3mbs?

If so, I'd look at NIC settings on your PC and the router and match 10/100. Use fixed settings both ends if auto is an option (be sure to set both ends)

Depending on your NIC, I'd stick to 100Mb Half duplex on both as well. Some PC NICS might support 100full but actually run really badly.

What service is your DSL - PPPoE (Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet)? If so, did you remove PPPoE from your NIC when installing your Netgear?

If still bad - you _could_ try new firmware for the Netgear, or you could replace it with a Linksys... ;o)

Hope you sort it out,

Peter.

I forgot about the firmware. Upgrading the firmware is very easy. Just be very careful to follow the directions.
