Hey so I'm thinking about getting another 4k monitor and just curious if my MSI 1070 would be able to handle it or if I should just do dual 1070. this is what's in my rig. Nothing over clocked

Intel i7 6700k unlocked
msi z170a gaming m7 motherboard
msi geforce gtx 1070
corsair 2x8g memory
Corsair H100i V2
Corsair RM850i

monitor
Samsung U28E590D 28-Inch UHD LED-Lit Monitor
Insignia 1080p tv

Solution
If we are talking gaming, a 1070 is well suited for 1440p. The best gaming experience today comes at 1440p w/ an IPS 165 Hz monitor. 4k isn't quite ready for prime time at this point as ....

a) Until the new AU Optronics panels are released (Asus and Acer will be selling soon) , there's not a 4k panel that I would buy today. The value of any 4k panel that is in use today will head sharply south the minute these panels drop... so if you want to invest in 4K, wait till they do.

b) The 1080 Ti struggles at 4k ... of the 22 games in Techpowerup's game test suite....

18% can't break 45 fps
36% can't break 60 fps
50% can't break 70 fps
86% can't break 76 fps

So where will those numbers be 1....2 ... 3 years from now
And then...

And then look here and we see that the TI is almost twice as fast as the 1070

Now as to your second screen, how do you intend to use it ? If its just a spot to have a web page open your temp monitoring utility or ventrilo, then the impact will be small. There's also no benefit to having this screen at 4k. Our recommendation for 4k is wait a year after the new screens come (and prices drop to reasonable levels) out at which time we should have cards capable of driving them at speeds which gaming enthusiasts have become accustomed to.

You won't be able to play a game in 4k and get 60fps with a single GTX 1070 for that you need 2 GTX 1070's and a single monitor. The other one like you said you can use it for regular computing and netflix.

Curious, do you think it would be possible to game on a 1080, if I sacrifice some settings? I got a 4K TV recently that I would like to hook up to my PC to game with a controller, but I am not too keen on upgrading my GPU for a 4th time.

Saccrificing some settings, yes you can game at 4k on a 1080 with a second monitor for display only, even more so if you only need 60hz update.

I dont mean to be an a** but that is why you need to research before you buy; buying a 4k monitor when you have a 1070 is fire ready aim.

lol, not at all! My GPU upgrade story is a weird one. I started with an rx 580, which I sold for double due to the mining craze and I bought a 1070. Then, a week later the 1080 prices dropped and came with Destiny 2, so I returned my 1070 and bought a 1080. I have an ultrawide 1440p monitor for gaming, but the TV I bought the cheapest 4K TV I could.

Its just a thought to play some games on it. It would be nice for when I want to lay in my bed and causally game on my controller. Ill give it a shot and see how it goes!

The only video card able to play 4k at an average of 60fps on high sittings is the GTX 1080 Ti.
