As you may recall, rumors and reports have been flying about regarding a Tyan Athlon SMP motherboard for six months now. As you can see from PC Watch's picture of the motherboard, it features 5 64-bit 33 MHz PCI slots, 1 64-bit 66 MHz PCI slot, 1 AGP Pro slot, 4 DDR SDRAM sockets, and, of course, two processors. As you can see, the board also sports integrated SCSI (notice, in particular, the two 68-pin LVD connectors located to the bottom and to the right of the PCI slots) and dual 100Mbit ethernet.
The motherboard uses the long-awaited AMD-760MP chipset, consisting of the AMD-762 northbridge and AMD-766 southbridge. Given the AMD-762 northbridge package is estimated to consist of roughly 900-pins, due to the need for a dedicated interface to each processor, motherboards based upon it will not come cheap, and this Tyan board is no exception. This post indicates that the 8-layer Tyan board may sell for up to $500.
AMD-760MP Status [3:16 pm] Rat
According to our sources, AMD is going to release its AMD-760MP chipset supporting dual-Athlon configurations in the end of March. The first mainboard manufacturer to develop boards based on this chipset will be Tyan. Tyan will announce its mainboard as soon as the chipset becomes available in mass quantities. So, in Q2 2001 the real boards from Tyan have every chance to be available, though in limited quantities at first. However, AMD will introduce Palomino aimed at dual-processor systems only in Q3 2001. Therefore, all other mainboard manufacturers planning to announce their products based on AMD-760MP, such as Gigabyte, Iwill, ASUS, SuperMicro, etc. will start mass product of these boards only in Q3. At the same time, there is some info proving that VIA will also introduce its new solution for Athlon dual-processor configurations in Q3.
