damn, all they need is a "u" in the url, and they'll be fine, hehe.

seriously, if Amd could pull this off and their dual solution is stable then I would consider it.

Right now Amd is not an option for me,it's not as inexpensive as the "Amd puppies" lead you to believe and because of all the issues surrounding it.

LoL. You make made me laugh!! I find it funny that you think it's hard work when you've never even tried a Thunderbird before. Kind of like me saying that I think spaghetti tastes like crap when I've never even ate it. But that's ok.

yeah, 'cause I know, two thunderbirds = bucket of fried chicken hehehe!

why would I go back to 1 cpu, when I have so much rendering to do?

First of all, point to me where the Tbirds are "not as cheap" as people say they are. Let's not bother going through the effort of pricing, we know that they ARE cheaper. To say otherwise is disingenuous.

Second, if you really believe that they suffer from such a heat problem, why on earth would you be willing to put TWO on a motherboard?! So you could have more heat in a confined space? So you could test the statistical significance of your "frying" hypothesis? It does not add up.

Shoot! Wouldn't you know it... talk about a dual AMD which I've been waiting for for over a year and I'll be the last to know ;) (still a dns error on my end)

flavico321 I take it you've seen that site which is now down... maybe you could give us a clue as to what the "exact same mobo" is???

I take it this is the one made by Tyan? Is it based on via? Is Tyan the only one in the dual athlon game, or are others already working on this also using the new [what is the name and who is it made by?] chipset?

OK, here it is in German (if I only spoke German)
http://www.zdnet.de/produkte/artikel/mainboard/200010/amdddr_03-wc.html

It looks like the original URL also comes up as
http://www.athlonmb.com/#News-1277
The CPUs used in these tests were two AMD Athlon 1.2GHz CPUs. As far as I could tell, these were standard Athlon processors. The CPUs were running on a 266MHz frontside bus connected to 256 megabytes of PC2100 DDR RAM. The chipset was a prerelease 760MP running on a Tyan motherboard. The system was running Mandrake 7.2 with a 2.4 kernel. The kernel used in the kernel compiles was 2.4.0ac12. which is a summary of the full story at http://www.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=01/01/31/2156234

The interesting (and a little suspect) thing was that the second processor reduced complie time from 4 1/2 minutes to 2 minutes (thus not just a 100% increase in speed, which would be great, but a 142% increase in speed!!! Now I'm an intel-user, but that would certainly be enough to get me to switch!)

Well workstations would be the Main thing, I imagine. Unless, of course, you like playing Quake 3 a lot.

As you may recall, rumors and reports have been flying about regarding a Tyan Athlon SMP motherboard for six months now. As you can see from PC Watch's picture of the motherboard, it features 5 64-bit 33 MHz PCI slots, 1 64-bit 66 MHz PCI slot, 1 AGP Pro slot, 4 DDR SDRAM sockets, and, of course, two processors. As you can see, the board also sports integrated SCSI (notice, in particular, the two 68-pin LVD connectors located to the bottom and to the right of the PCI slots) and dual 100Mbit ethernet.

The motherboard uses the long-awaited AMD-760MP chipset, consisting of the AMD-762 northbridge and AMD-766 southbridge. Given the AMD-762 northbridge package is estimated to consist of roughly 900-pins, due to the need for a dedicated interface to each processor, motherboards based upon it will not come cheap, and this Tyan board is no exception. This post indicates that the 8-layer Tyan board may sell for up to $500.

I want this board! :)

I will :)
The $500 MB price may be offset by inexpensive RAM prices, plus it has onboard NIC and SCSI saving me another $100.

Here is another possible dual Athlon motherboard - http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/pc/docs/article/20010124/17.jpg
(but I'm not sure, that may be an Intel???)

Here is another snippet from x-bit labs

AMD-760MP Status [3:16 pm] Rat
According to our sources, AMD is going to release its AMD-760MP chipset supporting dual-Athlon configurations in the end of March. The first mainboard manufacturer to develop boards based on this chipset will be Tyan. Tyan will announce its mainboard as soon as the chipset becomes available in mass quantities. So, in Q2 2001 the real boards from Tyan have every chance to be available, though in limited quantities at first. However, AMD will introduce Palomino aimed at dual-processor systems only in Q3 2001. Therefore, all other mainboard manufacturers planning to announce their products based on AMD-760MP, such as Gigabyte, Iwill, ASUS, SuperMicro, etc. will start mass product of these boards only in Q3. At the same time, there is some info proving that VIA will also introduce its new solution for Athlon dual-processor configurations in Q3.
