I need to install Ubuntu for college reasons, and I'd like to setup a dual boot machine. My current PC uses a SSD for Windows/Drivers/Programs and a HDD for Media/Less used programs. Can I partition my HDD and install Ubuntu on it? Will it interfere in anyway with Windows? Can I get it to dual-boot or will I need to chose the boot drive in BIOS everytime I want to swich OSes?

Solution

It will work without any problems. You will just have to get into the bios and disable secure boot just to be sure you avoid complications. Win bootloader can even load linux. Set up your linux distro and be careful that it installs grub on the drive it will sit on, and not the win one.
Then boot into windows and use EasyBCD to add a boot entry for linux.

No you should be fine installing to a separate Storage, However it may require an extra step then many tutorials provide.
No it wouldnt interfere with windows in anyway if you setup correctly.

Have you looked into other options? Maybe running linux in vmware while sitting on ssd. Depending on PC build and this being for school you should be able to run ubuntu with no noticeable problems. While being able to switch between the OS's with ease.

If you want to do the dual boot method there are many tutorials onlines. Just make sure to point the second os's location to the HDD

Alternatively you can setup ubuntu on a usb and avoid any mess with dual boot and setup boot options to usb first so you can boot directly when ever you have it plugged in while keeping it mobile
