i was thinking of dual booting my macbook pro, does mac osx have to be on the first partition like windows? i was thinking of partitioning it so that i have 1gb of mac osx where i would only use it when it come to proprietary software and downloading stuff off of itunes and then using the rest of the space for linux

I do not recommend booting 3 OS on a macbook plus its almost impossible. Windows needs boot camp. if you have a older macbook like mine Macbookpro5.5 its not even worth trying Linux.

Linux will be much more work If you really want to I would check out

https://elementary.io/

Which has a guide to install it on a mac. Be prepared to search for fan control and hibernation software Linux has bad battery
saving which will be needed. You do not need to purchase elementary just enter 0 in the custom box.

No it doesn't.

Your boot loader needs to be on the boot partition (first sector).

Is there any reason why you are not considering "bootcamp"? That allows you to switch between OSX and an other operating system (nominally Windows, but it could be Linux).

Otherwise you can try some of the "Hackintosh" boot loaders. see www.tonymacx86.com.

I have built a multiboot system (Windows 10, linux and OSX), albeit not on a genuine Macbook.

never really considered bootcamp but i'll look into it, basically i want to make sure it's not mandatory to have mac on the 1st partition like windows.
