do all 4 slots of 2 slot per channel with 2 channels need to have ram mods in them to have a dual channel memory configuration?

Is it correct that 4 sticks of ddr2 512mb have to be installed to total 2 gb, dual channel?

Thank you,

Layout of memory :

1 - 512 mb
2 - 512 mb
3 - 512 mb
4 - 512 mb

in general, slot 1 and 3 has the same colour, usually blue. Slot 2 and 4 is black. From that layout of memory, you are running dual channel with total memory is 2GB.
If you take out the memory in slot 4, dual channel is become single channel. Total memory is 1.5GB.
If you take out memory in slot 2 and 4, you'll run in dual channel with 1GB total capacity.

Dual channel requers as denoted dual sticks of ram meaning two in dimm slot (dimm0 dimm1) which is typicaly slot 1 and slot 3 going from left to right. if you want two gigs of ram however its actualy alot better to use 2 sticks of 1 gig memory then it is to use 4 sticks of 512 meg as its faster. It wont really hurt anything other then speed to use 4 though.
